Thinking about doing some small jobs, building a footing for a fence, pad for a small metal building.  Any thoughts on the 3-1/2 cubic foot cement mixer, item # 31979?Thanks!
Reply:My dad is building custom M.C. Esher paving stones for the back yard of my parents house, he got tired of had mixing so he picked one up. He uses it about 40 minutes/day every day and has been for the last 3 months, still seems to be going strong. For what it costs I say go for it.
Reply:Just be aware that you really can only mix around 1 1/2 cu ft max with it. I usually only mix 1 cu ft at a time with it."Common sense is not very common"http://www.tahoekeyshome.com
Reply:I have this one:http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...temnumber=2528Had to place a basement slab in a residence on a narrow alley street where we could not get a transit mix truck in.  We had Moffatts (like a fork lift if it's called something else where you are) deliver three pallets of 80 pound bags and mixed two bags at a time.  It could mix more than two bags at a time but not really three, so it was easier to just dump two full bags each load. Also had to place a footing for a spiral stairway in the back of this same residence (concrete cube 3'x2'4"x2'4" -- don't ask why -- the architect on this job was clueless about what's involved in actually building something).  Two men (one of them was me) finished the entire job in two days.  Probably could have done it all in a day but part of the basement was a crawl space that slowed things down some.  Worked like a champ and still going strong.  It will mix two bags in like 15 seconds.Maybe wait for them to go on sale and get the 20% coupon and you're in business. If you do a slab, don't forget the vapor barrier beneath -- 6 mil poly minimum (code required where I am).  Will help keep the humidity down in your metal building.Good luck and post pics when you're done.Last edited by phila.renewal; 04-25-2007 at 05:18 AM.

Reply:a strong back brother, i helped a friend pour a 20'x20'x4" slab. after feedin that thing for 8 hours i felt like i had been run over by a cement truck. get some beer and invite the biggest fellas (or ladies) and let them at it. remember to stay sober to supervise."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
Reply:You did a 20' x 20' pad with a small cement mixer...I am impressed! You use pre-mix or get sand, gravel and cement delivered?"Common sense is not very common"http://www.tahoekeyshome.com
Reply:sand, gravel and bags of cement. i was working at Holcim cement at the time and was getting the bagged stuff at cost. we had to keep putting the rubber cement strips because of drying time. if i remember correctly, we split it 3 times."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
Reply:20' x 20' x 4" slab = 5 cubic yards of concrete at about 2 ft3 per 'mix?  Sheesh, that's about 65 batches! Hmmm, 8 hrs runtime so that's about 8 batches per hour so you loaded, mixed, emptied, moved, and placed a batch every 7 minutes.  Non-stop.  For 8 hours.  And screeded, floated, and troweled in there as well.No wonder you felt like the cement truck ran you over.If you haven't worked concrete before, you will quickly learn that concrete waits for no one.  Fence posts and pier blocks are one thing, a slab is a whole 'nuther scale of job.  Because you can't tell the concrete to slow down its curing, and once it starts to set-up it can happen FAST.  Especially in the heat (like in Texas).

Reply:moonrise, trust me it took longer than 8 hours. that was just my part. if i remember correctly, there was 9 or 10 people there. it took somewhere along the lines of 12-13 hours. i did my part and then went to the bull float and bud light. you get free beer and helpers will come."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
Reply:I've got one and it works great. It was a PIA to assemble because some of the bolts were too short so instead of driving back to the store I went to the hardware store and got the ones I needed. The store in Ft. Worth, TX will give you the internet price if you print the page and take it to them.Last edited by mvintx; 05-13-2007 at 11:06 PM.
Reply:Thanks, guys!  I picked on up the other day for $175 out the door.  Haven't put it together yet.
Reply:I bought one at an auction for $100. No idea how much it was used before I got it but I've had it nearly two years and it works just fine.
Reply:It'll mix two 80# bags of concrete pretty well. You can squeeze in a third but it gets pretty top-heavy and some of the mix tends to slosh out. I used a spray adhesive to hold the gasket in place when assembling the two halves. Grease wouldn't do the job for me.
Reply:Finally put mine together, but haven't used it yet.  The instructions were pretty good, but a few things weren't real clear.  I have some rubber washers that I haven't found a place for, they aren't listed in the parts list.  Guess I'll put them on the blades inside the tub.  I just wish they had marks to properly align the tub halves so the blades would bolt up properly.  Had to take it apart and re-align it, but it wasn't hard.Seems good for the money so far.
Reply:UPDATE:I've been using my Cement Mixer lately to pour a fence footing.  With about 700 feet of fence, it will get a workout (me, too!).I found it awkward to move the mixer around, so I welded a tongue on the 'handle' side and bolted a 2" trailer hitch to it.  Now I can move it easily with my HF Trailer Dolly.  America Needs AMERICA'S Oil!!!"Global warming is the greatest scam in history ...There is no run away climate change. Reply:steve, that's a cool idea with the dolly.  I bet if you could put larger wheels on the mixer it would be even easier.
