I was wondering if there are any direct swap leads that I can use that should be better than the original ones. It looks to me like the connectors are smaller than I've seen before.

Reply:yep, talking about this: http://www.harborfreight.com/80-amp-...der-91110.htmlI got it used for $60 including 7lb of rods. I'd like to try Carbon Arc Brazing with it, single carbon style, and for that I want to be able to back the electrode out in the stinger so I have better control, without having to hold the bare electrode pencil style
Reply:Before you go too thick with new leads for the 80A inverter (now p/n 61749) open the case and take a look at the leads supplying the Dinse sockets. They're definitely not #4 (I'm thinking they're 6AWG) and there's not much point going to #4 if the leads supplying power to the sockets are a lighter gage right?Probably a good plan to upgrade the supply leads inside if you're going to go thicker outside.

Reply:that 120 volt 80 amp machines works best with 10 ga extension cord and keep weld leads short. machine only puts out low weld voltage. 80 amps acts like 60 amps comparing to other welding machines and you cannot pull a long arc length ever..i got machine on a 120 volt outlet 3 feet from 20 amp circuit breaker and used 10 ga wire from outlet to circuit breaker. as long as you accept machine is not made for welding over 1/8" thick ever even using multiple passes it works ok. i find 1/16 and 5/64 and 3/32 6013 rod works best.if you think you can use 6011 at 80 amps and get a hot puddle you will be disappointed. that machine at 80 acts like 50 to 60 amps compared to HF 240 volt tig/stick welder. literally with the 2 machines side by side on same steel plate using same size and type of welding rod the difference between the 120 volt and 240 volt welding machines is dramatic, obvious, in your face at least 20 amp difference instantaneously noticeable and repeatable. i know i have done test dozens of times..i got both HF $200 240volt tig/stick welder and the 120 volt 80 amp inverter. the 240 volt machine works good. the 120 volt machine i have not taken back to store cause it just barely does what it says it does, when they say max welding 3/16 or less thick material they are talking even using multiple passes it does not have enough power for thick material period.

Reply:Originally Posted by Dee_veloperI had no luck using 6013 with this machine.  The only rod I can get to perform well is 5/64 7014.  The 3/32 rods won't burn hot enough and 1/16 are no more useful than 5/64 and they are a lot more expensive.I also use a 10 ga extension cord but use the original leads.  I doubt if changing the short leads to a heavier gauge wire would make a noticeable difference for this small machine.
Reply:My performax 110V inverter 75amp on 30 breaker burned E6011 3/32" at 60 amps and splattered messy at 75amps I used Fleetweld 180 E6011 40-80 amp

Reply:I use a 110v 75 amp a performax inverter arc welder.Blue Demon 5/64" 7014 45-70 amps 5 lbs  My electrodes were wrapped inside a sturdy re-usable plastic container as well as outside. Purchased mine in past online vendor. It typically is seen for approx.$18-$20 5 lbs. Blackstone 5/64"  E6013 35-60 amp were burned once started.I found the tricky to strike arc Fleet weld 180 E6011 40-80 amp was pretty good at 60amps with some extra effort. On 75 amps its splattered.
Reply:Tempered, thanks for the info.I don't often use small rods, but for small yard art, sheet metal and such, the 5/64" work out OK so as not to burn a hole or cut an edge.  The 1/16" are too small and whippy with no penetration.  If I try to use 3/32", they burn too hot even down at low amps.  I like 7014 and 7018 with the smoother bead and the 6013 rod are just too ugly and messy.I just ordered some Blue Demon 5# box of 5/64" 7014 rods from amazon...$14.75 + about $9 shipping.  Man, those little buggers are hard to find.
Reply:Update to the Blue Demon rods.  I tried them out today and they welded just fine.  Made in USA too!!  For anyone needing to do small, non-structural welds on thin metal (such as yard art, etc.), these are good.  Much cleaner bead than 6013's.
