My friend has a spec tec dump trailer and he wants to at least patch some holes in the floor, or completely cover the rear 8' of deck.According to the build sheet, it has "Burnell 4000" steel on the floor. I'm not finding anything about it online. Anyone familiar with it? (Substitutes for it, what wire to weld it with?)ThanksIW Local 580 NY, NY
Reply:What caused the holes, rust or a heavy object? What thickness is this "burnell 4000"?                                        MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:I'm guessing they mean 400 Brinell hardness steel. Likely AR400 steel. My understanding of all AR steels is that when you weld on them you soften the steel in the area of the weld. Also if you torch cut the steel, same effect. As for the steel it's self, it's just real hard (43 on Rockwell C) abrasion resistant steel often used on loader buckets and the like to hold up to the abuse of digging.
Reply:at 400 is commonly plug weleded in place on big cats, loaders etc. no problem welding it just follow proper welding procedures
Reply:Should have known to just attach a picture. It's mostly cracked and bent down. I'm assuming that's from heavy rocks. Where it's dirt/gravel, is apparently pushed down as well.By the gate, over the rear crossmember, it is worn through due to abrasion. He wants me to "bang it up and weld the cracks" (because it's always that easy). I'm thinking laying strips of flat steel in the low spots between ribs would be the way to go. Thoughts? Reply:What wire do you use? He's insistent that we pull the original parts up, weld, and maybe reinforce underneath. He's concerned about dirt catching and basically catching more and more dirt. (I dunno, it's his truck and his business, I'll do whatever).IW Local 580 NY, NY
Reply:I bet it refers to AR400, it is used for boxes on dump trucks and skid plates for front end loaders. I've used it lots of times for skid plate repairs, AR500 is better but is harder to find. AR400 is common at any metal supplier, 500 is a special order in my area.
Reply:Any thoughts on what wire would work best? I can run mig or fcaw. Thanks.IW Local 580 NY, NY
Reply:I use s6 solid wire. Some guys around here stick weld new box bottoms in. Use what you got.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
