How to tell if I have the oversized exciter?

I have a 1948 Shorthood code 1123. According to Lincoln it has the oversized exciter that is supposedly able to run a grinder. Does anyone know if this is true or how I can tell? The wiring was a hack job on here and I am trying to rewire it and would LOVE a DC outlet even if possible. Any idea how to do that wiring? Thanks ahead of time!
Reply:mine arent shorthoods.    i had to swap one outa from one my parts one.    it had an extra bar or two.    so the bar count was diff.  also, it was slightly larger in dia, as it barely cleared.    both commentators ran dc grinders for meLast edited by 123weld; 04-17-2020 at 11:01 PM.
Reply:Read this on how to wire an outlet and remotehttps://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthrea...orthood+remote
Reply:From what I understand, the standard exciter had single wound windings that are smaller ,and the armature is alot smaller. Those Short Hoods didn't have a Rheostat or a plug outlet. The Voltage knob had a chain running back to the governor to speed up the engine for more voltage as needed from idle on up.SA 200s : 1944 1945 1963 1965 1969 1981 SA 250 D3.152 DC only2004 Ranger 10,000Lincoln Pro Mig 135Miller Load BankHobart GPB 258 PipelinerHobart GPB 261 MainlinerHobart Airforce 250Everlast PA 200st
Replyook at this post and pictures, this looks to be smaller excitor.https://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthrea...ght=Short+hoodCompare to thesehttps://www.mcssl.com/store/4833177/sa-200-generatorLast edited by guajilloweld03; 04-19-2020 at 11:58 AM.
Reply:Yes quajilloweld03, you hit the nail on the head. That was the machine I was thinking about. Not to many around like that one.
Reply:BYW200 is completely correct. I had one in for a diesel conversion several years back. I had to change out the exciter armature and coils, but the bigger coils won't fit in the exciter housing, so that has to be changed too! Then it's time repair all that old wiring you mentioned.
Reply:Thanks for the replies, I have deduced that I indeed have the larger exciter. Mine has a rheostat and the standard size exciter coils and metal pieces inside coils with standard newer bolt spacing. That link was helpful to the wiring of the outlet also, mine has been "upgraded" from the old bellows style to the R 57 so have to try to figure out if those diagrams all align with it correctly. The idler works perfectly at this point though so don't want to go to the electronic idler yet.
Reply:What's the distance between the bolts on the sides of the exiter barrel?"You can't out puke a buzzard"
Reply:Just thinking about it, my 1944/55 has the larger exciter coils and armature, with the later model brush holders. The generator housing has the chain roller on it, but the rest of it relates to a 1955 with bellows R51 and mercury switch that would have came with a Rheostat, I have a true Heinz 57 LOL!!SA 200s : 1944 1945 1963 1965 1969 1981 SA 250 D3.152 DC only2004 Ranger 10,000Lincoln Pro Mig 135Miller Load BankHobart GPB 258 PipelinerHobart GPB 261 MainlinerHobart Airforce 250Everlast PA 200st
