I’ve seen Tig brazing mentioned several times in different threads lately. This is all new to me. So I went to You Tube to see what it’s all about. Watched this video of Jody’s.Does anybody have a link to buy some silicon bronze Tig filler, and aluminum bronze for cast iron Tig welding?ThanksDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Replyook at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/301155963209Same seller has 3/32 also.
Reply CEP - for c.i., go with Ni55 or Ni99 filler. Recommend  TECHALLOY 99 Tig."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:I've had luck with the Blue Demon stuff on Amazon, otherwise the stuff from my LWS is fine, too.  I've done some Silicon Bronze on mild and stainless, and some copper and copper to stainless.  It is a little weird starting out since you don't melt the base metal but it flows really nicely.  I just watch until the puddle kind of flash flows out onto the surface of the base metal and that's where you want the heat.  Any more and you start melting in base metal, any less and it is just kinda sitting on top of the base metal.  I melted some into some stainless on accident and even grinding it down and cleaning it up I couldn't get it to stop cracking after that, so really watch the wetting out and don't go too hot.  Jody has another video running fillet welds with it.I've got some Aluminum Bronze on the way now for some cast iron stuff and I'm excited to try it out.  I think brazing using AC is going to be challenging.  I've got a junk cylinder head on the way to practice a little bit.  ChuckE2009 has a video with a guest showing AC welding with this stuff but I couldn't find anything else.Outrunning my headlights since '81.

Reply:CEP, I think Silvaloy or silver alloy is used for brazing but its about $70 a pound. I like the Silicon bronze from my LWS. It doesnt crack when it cools.
Reply:CEPI just finished running about 80' of Sil-Bronze on .125, .187, and .250 A36.It dresses like butter, it restarts flawlessly without prep, and warpage is minimal. In one pound lots it's $ 13.16 at my LWS. If you don't try it - you won't miss it.Opus
Reply:I’m interested in it for cast iron welding mostly. I ordered those rods off ebay.I bought 2-pounds of the 3/32” nickel aluminum bronze.1-pound of the 1/16” aluminum bronze.1-pound of the 3/32” silicon bronze.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:For the aluminum bronze you may want to run AC instead of DC. Makes the puddle flow a bit nicer.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:weldingsupply.com has silicon bronze and aluminum bronze. Reasonable prices and you can buy as little as 1 lb.A few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps

Reply:CEP in my opinion aluminum bronze in a majority of applications is a lot better than silicon bronze even though it does not braze as well.  there are different variants like A1, A2, A3.   for most applications you're going to want A2  but I would look into all of them it's pretty fascinating stuff and the applications are endless especially for cast-iron.
Reply:Its funny that this subject came up. I just got some aluminum bronze to try for tiging cast iron.  I looked for that video about 2 weeks ago but could not find it . Thanks for the link.   I have never done this on cast iron before either.  I have used a lot of silicon bronze but never for cast iron. Easy stuff to work with.  I have a marine exhaust manifold coming into the shop in the near future so I figured I would try this process on it now that I have an ac tig welder with adjustable balance control. I have always gotten silicon bronze from my local LWS no problem.
Reply CEP - check out Peter ""welding"" in TIG with both SiBr & AlBr fillers.  Does a nice job explaining the applications and showing his results.@ OPUS FERRO - can you post any images of your results? Especially on the 11ga samples.  Don't recall you ever showing the community a sample of your welding or fabrication projects/training.Last edited by ManoKai; 08-07-2016 at 06:18 AM."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

Reply CEP - anytime Carl.  Still need to flame straighten that 3/16" curved assembly.  Soon.  Real soon.  In case you are interested in learning about using the in-line flux process, check out GasFlux in Elyria, OH and their suite of available Liquid GasFluxes. Henry James Bicycles sells the GasFluxer Model 69T for ~$600.  And hey look, they use PTFE to line the "69T" tank.  Note, image seen online from the aforementioned UK bike fabricator. Reply:Seems like I've had happier results using SiBr with O/A than tig...I usually heat the filler, then dip it in borax, which melts/sticks to it, then start brazing with it.

Reply:Got some 1/8” A2 Aluminum Bronze yesterday. I ordered 1/16”, and 3/32”. But the Post Office lost those rods.I did a fillet weld on 1/4” flatbar. Set the Dynasty 300 on AC, and at 150-AMPS. I read where Jody set the balance at 95%, so this is what I did. As you can see the 1/8” rod was a little big to weld the pipe cap to the coupling.Never done this before. Pretty ! Reply:SSilicon bronze is awesome wire for repairs on cast iron. I use .030" MIG wire with 100% argon. It's easier than brazing with a torch and you don't put as much heat into the parent metal I repaired an expensive Kalamazoo belt sander that was on it's last legs. The belt cut trough the casting and one of the bolts couldn't be removed so I MIG brazed it with silicon bronze. It grinds easy and it's not as brittle as a weld.Last edited by 69sa200; 08-13-2016 at 03:29 PM.
Reply:Carl, you are like my friend from college, who when asked while he was playing pool "Oh, you can play pool?" would respond with "Never played in my life, want to play for money?" Reply:I fixed the legs on this cast iron fireplace for my neighbor using silicon bronze MIG wire. The bolts rusted out in the legs and one of them was down to its last rusted bolt. So I welded all of them as a precaution. It's easy to use outside and it's more ductile than cast iron welding rod. It's still considered brazing even though I used a MIG welder because it doesn't melt the parent metal. You get these nice gold colored welds too.

Reply:Haha. You do have to charge more because the filler metal is $17 per lb.  The .030" is is the most versatile. It's good for auto body steel and heavy 1/2" thick castings as well. Another advantage for silicon bronze MIG on auto body metal is that it doesn't burn off the galvanized plating or warp the sheet metal as easily as regular MIG. The Japanese auto manufacturers require it's use on all body work. It's not good for anything structural or impact critical. But for sheet metal it's my go to wire.  I keep it loaded in my 120 volt MIG welder.http://store.cyberweld.com/haersibrmigw.html
Reply:I copied this section from an article about silicon bronze MIG. It gives you a general idea of why it's becoming so popular. http://www.bodyshopbusiness.com/mig-...rning-process/"MIG brazing is done at about 1,940 degrees, depending on material. Steel melts at a much higher temperature, and so does the galvanizing. At the lower temperature, the galvanizing has minimal if any damage on the steel. That’s the corrosion part. Second is the bond. MIG welding with steel requires the melting of the base metal and combining the wire. MIG brazing does not melt base metals for a fusion weld. This is a non-fusion weld. The amount of copper silicon adhering to the surface and flowing in between panels gives the strength needed. Because there is less heat and no melting, the damage to the base metals is minimal and coatings for corrosion protection are preserved."
