What do you guys think of the Millermatic® 252. I am taking a welding class in college planning on taking the mig(which i am now) then tig then the ark. They have advance classes in all three as well i will properly take. I am thinking a dual major with welding being the second to construction management. I want to get a welder and am thinking the 252 though it cost alot. One question i have is some of the lower cost modules with a thinner welding max will say like 3/8th in one past. What does this mean. Does it mean there do thick such as 1/2 or 3/4 just takes more time and mult. passes. I am assuming this will be disccussed in my class but just thought i would ask. Also i saw a website that had it for 2k but it listed for 2500 on miller what should i expect to pay for the 252. Thanks alot guys Ohh might add what i plan to do with the welder. I want to be able to weld the thinner stuff ofcoarse the option to do around 1/2 if need be. Some steel alum is my main area i want to be able to do. I am planning smoker build out of 55 gallon barrels soon. But i want to be able to do thicker stuff to make say a custom ATV trailer. Plus i know two nieghbors that want 4x8 and one wants a 8x12 trailer for his mowing business. So i can make alittle cash there i hope. Thanks again
Reply:If you are serious about welding then the Miller 252 would be an excellent welder. I think it is good for 200 amps at 60% duty cycle. That means you will be able to pretty much weld what ever you come across. If you have that kind of money to spend on a welder then you won't make a mistake buying a Miller. The Millers usually have a good resale value if you ever want to get rid of it.
Reply:When i get ready to buy one i will have the cash. When I am getting my fall refund for unused finacial aid and my student loan. I will have about 3k that i had planned on useing to scubadiving but i am leaning toward the welder. I want a good welder. Though i may never use it for serious use or to make any money. mainly it is something i have alway wanted to do plus it is paid for and i get 3 credits for it. Plus i do not think it will be a bad thing to know how to weld. I know i want one and i want one that well weld what ever i want. I am thinking maybe buy a cheap one then get a nice one like the 252 this coming spring after the class. I could get a small portable 110 to do my smoker practice at home which will help me in school then get the good one next year. Reply:I bought a miller 252 a while ago, and it is supposed to weld half inch material in one pass. Right now im building stuff out of very thin dia. 2x2 tubing, I would guess it is about .100 wall, and it is working great. If you can afford one, I don't think you can go wrong. 200 amps ,60% duty cycle, 250 amps ,40% duty cycle, 300 amps, 20%duty cycle. Wire feed 50-700 inches per minute. I stole this welder at $2000, it was bought brand new in october 08, and had been tested for maybe 2 feet of welding. It's not what ya know, it's who ya know!!!!!Last edited by yammyman; 08-25-2009 at 11:12 PM.

ike the other guys have said... I don't think you can go wrong with the 252, if you can afford it. It's enough welder that you're not going to be wishing you had gotten something bigger right off the bat. I really enjoy my MM251. ike the others said, the 252 is a great machine. Have one at home and at work. I've used it on 18 ga on up to half inch steel. We have the 30a spoolgun at work and it works well with aluminum too. Although I am just a hobbyist and it is easy to use right out of the box. I checked a month ago and could get a new one for about $1950 at the LWS, so shop around and play the poor college boy routine. Around here used they don't last long at all.Millermatic 252"Don't worry, he's got a welder, he can fix anything"
Reply:The 252 is a great machine, you won't go wrong with it. You can get the spool gun for it to weld aluminum later if you want to. The spool gun runs about $1000.Now that that's out of the way, there is a much bigger problem I see here....Using gov't financial aid and student loan money to buy a welding machine??? Something is seriously wrong with the government's educational aid system if the taxpayers are buying you a new welding machine! I don't support that at all. Oh wait, I'm a taxpayer, so I guess I DO get to support it, whether I like it or not! Wonderful. My tax dollars at work... All those machines in my sig, and others I have that are not listed, I bought the old fashioned way, with money earned by the work my hands produced. Guess we're a wellfare nation now. Free welding equipment for everyone... yay... NOT! Maybe I should sign up for Welding Welfare too, maybe I can get the rest of the taxpayers to buy me that new Pipe Pro 304 I've been wanting... haha.Last edited by DesertRider33; 08-26-2009 at 06:51 AM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:generally the welder would be a school supply since he is going to be furthering his education. just saying.... and he might make some taxable money with it so it isn't exactly free just a good faith loan kind of thing.
Reply:Airgas is running a special till the end of Sept. The 252 is $1995.
