Bandsaw question

Hey all,Been considering getting a new bandsaw. But working out of a 3 car garage that houses a car and a bike, space is somewhat limited. I've done some searching, and everything I see says that woodworking saws can't be used for metal due to the speed, but can metal saws be used to cut wood? Either With a different blade or the same? Don't do much woodwork, but occasionally need to make miter cuts on 2x4's and 4x4's.
Reply:I have both a portaband and a wood bandsaw. The portaband can be used in a pinch, but very slow. I've seen people use wood saw for metal, but in a pinch as well. The two are not really interchangeable imo. Of the two, a variable speed portaband would be my choice for limited space. What's your budget? If you get a portaband, pick up a swag offroad table for it. Make's it's a portable band saw, so to speak. Or you can make your own.

Been usinga small trim saw to cut 2x's, but it's kind of a pain setting up for miter cuts. Also considering one of the rage saws that'll do both, but I don't like the idea of special blades. For now I'm running a 14" Dewalt abrasive that does ok, but I'm just not happy with the quality of the cuts. For knocking big pieces down to rough length is great, but seems to take a long time with a grinder before they're ready to weld. Also considered a dry saw and a cheap miter, but I really kinda want a bandsaw.
Reply:Actually, thinking about it now I've got an old harbor freight abrasive chop that doesn't get used since I got the dewalt. Hated that thing because there was always a bevel to the blade, bad enough that the blade would hit the table. Maybe a tweak with a hammer could get me a workable wood saw with a blade change...

Reply:The gold standard for home shop size combination saw is the 14" Delta Wood/Metal bandsaw. Here's the one I had for decades.
Reply:I have the Grizzly G-9742 and I love it! Have had it for about 7 years.6 months after I bought it, the hydraulic cylinder took a dump. I called Grizzly and they sent me a new one no charge.No problems since.

Reply:Thanks for all the info guys. Still trying to decide what to do, and leaning towards a good cold saw like the makita lc1230 paired with a not so great miter saw for the rare wood projects. I think the2 of them would take up less shop space, and the price difference wouldn't be much compared to a good bandsaw. And the cold saw would do everythingi need, basically just need to make good miter cuts on up to 4" square tube

Reply:If you look at the back of the two machines you will see the drastic difference between them. (Ignore the fact that the wood saw [#2 photo] example has the motor mounted high.)
Reply:This has been a very good saw for me. It's a HF Wells 9X18 twin post. It consistently cuts with .010 accuracy through six inches travel. I also have 10' infeed and outfeed roller tables not shown. The saw and table are on casters and move easily in the shop. Reply:i bought the harbor freight larger horizontal/vertical bandsaw and it cuts pretty good...has varying speeds and used a discount coupon on it....looks very similar to grizzly/jet...Learning the ropes....
