Hey all, I just finally got all the little things done so I put fluids in and went for my first start. Got a bit of smoke puffing out the exhaust but she doesnt want to fully start up, for one I think my carb float is sticking which is disappointing cause I did a complete rebuild on it, I have gas dipping slowly out of the air filter.. tried the old tap on the car to see if that would get it to quit, but it still seems to be be stuck or letting too much into the bowl. Also when I am turning it over ever once in a while I get a puff of smoke out of the air filter?? I figure it has mostly to do with timing and not sure if I got the mag set correctly. I followed the directions but until it is running there is no way to check it with a timing light? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated, this is my first time dealing with a mag and I am sure it is probably what I am doing wrong.
Reply:Your machine looks great. Timing is actually pretty simple, it took me two nights to figure this out.Here is what I did. Remove all spark plugs , put finger on #4 and rotate engine by hand. When #4 is on compression stroke see that flywheel DC mark is aligned with pointer at timing window .Next removed valve cover so could see valves open and close. Then attach wires to spark plugs and lay them on exhaust manifold. Start to rotate engine by hand and follow firing order see that each cylinder fires when valves are closed. When you come back to number #4 it should fire when DC mark is close to the pointer mark. If it is not remove magneto and reset following procedure. Then rotate engine by hand and see that it fires where it is suppose to.For me it took awhile to find DC mark and T mark, then I was working outside and had mag cap removed and it got wet so mag would not fire. When Mag got moisture two plugs would fire at same time. So after mag was dry put cap on and spark plug wires with spark plugs attached and rotated by hand to verify it was firing. Just be sure it does not sap you. Do not touch ground lead on Mag .
