AR400 - ID and Welding Process?

I'm making a skid plate for my Jeep, and I just cut out a piece of 1/4" plate from an old sheet of what I though was A36. Now I'm  pretty sure its AR400.It is much harder to drill than regular steel. I've broke a couple 5/32 pilot drill bits and had to resharpen my dewalt black oxide bits every 2 or 3 holes now. The milwaukee cobalt bits haven't needed resharpening but they're not cutting like they should. Even cutting oil isn't helping, and the bits are getting hotter than normal. It also took more hits to get a good punch mark.Does this sound like AR400 to you guys? Any way I can ID it? I know for a fact it is not A36. Any markings are also long gone.I also need to weld some stiffener braces across this. Will preheat - but now I'm not sure what to weld it with. I have 1/8 7018-H4R, 5/32 7024,  TIG or 250A solid wire MIG.ThanksSent from my S4 using Tapatalk1988 Big 50 Diesel CC/CV1982 Weldanpower 225/2101968 SAE 300 motor generatorMaxstar 200SD2015 AHP 200x"The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so." - Ronald Reagan
Reply:Shoot it with a gun. Even a ak47 shouldn't go through 1/4 ar. Got a gun?but a ak47 will go through 3/8 mild steel
Reply:I like your thinking! I've got a 700 chambered in 308 I can use. I'll give that a try tomorrow. Dont know why I didnt think of that...I'll  cut a small piece of the maybe ar400 and some A36 and compare.Sent from my S4 using Tapatalk1988 Big 50 Diesel CC/CV1982 Weldanpower 225/2101968 SAE 300 motor generatorMaxstar 200SD2015 AHP 200x"The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so." - Ronald Reagan
Reply:That will just go through probably. Try a pistol or something and try 1/4" mild steel next to it also. Just weld it like mild steel, maybe pre heat a little but you could try without and watch for a crack. I've tig that stuff no problem
Reply:1/4" AR400 isn't going to need preheat.  Just use a 70 series electrode....7018 or ER70S-6 for example.  It will weld to mild steel without issue.
Reply:Thanks tbone and moto. In that case I may go ahead and just weld it with 7018 if it doesnt matter either way. Might make some targets out of it for fun but we'll see. Thanks.Sent from Mobile1988 Big 50 Diesel CC/CV1982 Weldanpower 225/2101968 SAE 300 motor generatorMaxstar 200SD2015 AHP 200x"The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so." - Ronald Reagan
Reply:What about hitting it with a hammer if it bounces it's AR plate if it doesn't bounce it's mild SteelSent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk
Reply:I tried that but its only 1/4" so it seems to have some bounce either way.Sent from Mobile1988 Big 50 Diesel CC/CV1982 Weldanpower 225/2101968 SAE 300 motor generatorMaxstar 200SD2015 AHP 200x"The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so." - Ronald Reagan
Reply:It seems to weld just fine to 7.25# channel. No obvious cracking.ThanksSent from Mobile1988 Big 50 Diesel CC/CV1982 Weldanpower 225/2101968 SAE 300 motor generatorMaxstar 200SD2015 AHP 200x"The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so." - Ronald Reagan
