Back over the winter I rebuilt a skid steer slab crab. http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...rab&highlight=Well..............like I said, these guys are animals! This is what I consider gross operator abuse. One thing I can say is, not one of my welds broke!!!Attachment 1465101Attachment 1465111My next recommendation will be to sell these two longer units, as is, and use the four new ones they just purchased, which are much shorter. Again, they loved the way I beefed these up, so the past two weekends I beefed up the new ones the same way. I welded another 3/4" to the sides, and 3/4"x5" across the front and rear of the bottom. They bought twelve new Deere skid steers, the big ones, and it's just too much for these long crabs."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:I haven't looked closely at it, but they even might have bowed up that 5/16" floor!!! In the pics it looks like the 3/4" sides bent up, but I'm pretty sure it didn't. When I rebuilt it, it gave that appearance because of the different width of the new material. I will try to get more detail this weekend. I will tell you one thing, I will ALWAYS have weekend work, as long as these guys are in business. They don't even get mad at this shtuff, as long as the jobs are getting done. They have had the new Deeres about two months now. Already, they have had to bend back two of the quick attach mounts on the machines. I don't know if these are tighter tolerances when attaching, and one side isn't locking in??? Those happened during the week, so I wasn't the one to repair them. And I never sat in one yet, so I don't know the visibility of the locking pins. I know on my Bobcat, if I raise the arms and tilt the bucket down, I can clearly see the pins are locked.Last edited by Stick-man; 07-14-2016 at 10:10 PM."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:How much do you pay those guys to make work for you?
Reply:So, it was used in a manner that exceeded its designed specifications.Been there, done that.Charge 'em up the wazoo to repair it or build a new one!Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A

Reply:Originally Posted by PipelinerYep, if you insist on driving tee posts with rubber hammers, you're going to need to buy a lot of rubber hammers.  Just charge them enough to make it worth your time to build / repair and keep doing it until they figure it out.  (IF.....)

Reply:The one "slab crab" I have used was built with 4 "ribs" of 1" plate and no floor to allow the dirt to drop out, kind of like a rock rake.Nice job and work Stick man!  Thanks for posting the pictures.  You repaired it well and kept it in service until they found they found the next week point, different from the first one.

Reply:When I was an apprentice I was bitching to my foreman about the process workers having bust something we had made and his answer was "you think the company employs you for your good looks? They employ you to fix what wears out and gets bust, as long as these guys break things you got a job". Repair it and smile.

Reply:Originally Posted by Stick-manThis is a Deere skid steer, with a universal attachment. It will fit all common  LOL! Hey, as long as something failed, I'm glad it was something they supplied. But even though that cutting edge was a slightly used (on one side) takeoff, there really wasn't anything wrong with it. And, although I'm no expert on the subject, I am pretty sure HAZ had nothing to do with it. Again, it was very reassuring knowing that my welds held. Just a little confidence boost there, since I never get to destructive test my welds.
ReplyThis gives new meaning to destructive testing!!! Nick D - No, it was an actual bucket cutting edge. No the exact match to the shanks I welded on (different brand), but I made it work. Again, these are older crabs, and the new machines are so much heavier, with more capacity, and with more weight towards the rear, so more leverage."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!!
