Todays fun, I had 4 of these wear parts that go inside a tree grinder. All done with 5/32 Lincoln Wearshield welded at 200 amps off my Trailblazer. I did one off the Syncrowave and it does not like the rod periodPreheat The startDuringDoneDisclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:This is the one I welded with the Syncrowave, ran like crap off that machine.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Curious, why fill and not a grid/cross-hatch pattern? Need as much surface as possible/gaps won't fill like they would with dirt on a bucket?Bruce
Reply:Not a dirt piece, goes inside a grinder, the knives use this as an anvil for lack of a better term. You need all the wear resistance you can get. Start grinding stumps and pallets and the dirt and nails raise hell inside the machine.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Replyid you get any deflection/warping on the 3/4" base?
Reply:Nothing, I kept an eye on the first one, they are almost a solid AR casting so they are pretty solid.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Wow looks good! I can't ever seem to make my hard facing look even remotely good
Reply:Nice looking work.I must be missing something. The part in the first pic doesn't look used let alone worn.
Reply:Brand new out of the box part, at 2 grand a piece X4, this is a preventative measure. Basically do it now or do more of it later.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:That was what I was thinking, wanted to ask to clarify. Thanks for the info.Bruce

Replyo you know how long they use to last without hardfacing, and how long they last after hardfacing? What was the cost for hardfacing it?For some reason, hardfacing new or old parts and rebuilding worn away material is always interesting. Last edited by G-son; 11-03-2012 at 11:42 AM.
Reply:Got 1100 hours out of the originals, and now that are complete junk. I used Wearshield BU, not the hardest, but it does not shatter or peel in this application. More Pix to follow.Last edited by TozziWelding; 11-03-2012 at 08:54 PM.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:I've only run one type of lincoln wearshield, and I don't know if it is the same rod, but those welds look real nice Tozzi. I wasn't able to make mine as pretty. I know I didn't like breathing any of the smoke from that stuff. Nasty.
Replyooks like good work to me. I have always enjoyed build up and surfacing.
Reply:Scary looking down in there.  Has that look of a machine that eats things in the middle of the night, all by itself. Looks like a ton of teeth worn off too huh?"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Man, you get all the fun jobs! I would probably enjoy this kind of work.Do you R&R the parts, or just weld them?"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:I need to re do the rotors, but need the factory manual to get exactly where to do it or the waranty is voided. I will r&r the anvils when we change out the screens, and do the cutters.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:It's amazing how much stress must be locked up in that anvil assembly what with the fabricating welds and the hard surfacing.  I always look at stuff and try to imagine the stress "lines".  Amazing"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Tozzi, any difference laying the hardsurface wire/rod than normal welding? I've never hard surfaced anything myself, curious if it's much harder/take additional skill, etc. Also, on an off-hand note, if you're doing say a cross-hatch pattern (like on sides of a bucket), can you use a dissimilar metal like aluminum or brass or something else as a straight edge? Like, if you're running a hardsurface wire, have something solid there that won't be fused but is straight for your nozzle to follow? I'm terrible for drawing snakes on the best of days Bruce
Reply:Nice job, I find the Euctectic 400 series to be a bit better in the impact dept than the lincoln BU.  I back up with 8016's and run over it 2 passes. I deal mostly with Dimond Z 1463, and a Peterson horizontal grinder. The guy we had that came out to one clearing job had a big tub grinder. It really didn't like the small loose stuff they were loading in that video, We had to keep feeding it heavier stuff to get it to eat the small stuff. An interesting thing we found out is that he does a lot of work on demo jobs. They can stuff almost all of a wood frame house  with the exception of the cast iron tub in his tub grinder and just grind it all up so it fits in dumpsters easily..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:The Wearshield BU is a back-up underlayment alloy.  Used to rebuild worn surfaces back up to almost where they are supposed to be dimensionally and then you put the actual 'hardfacing' on top of that.Wearshield BU lists a hardness as Rc 23-28 with three layers, Rc15-20 with one layer. Way harder than a plain mild steel, but not really all that hard as far as 'hard' steel or 'hard' hardfacing goes.If rebuilding some of the higher-carbon 'harder' base materials, some 'buttering' layers of 7018 are usually recommended, then the BU layer(s), and then finally the actual hardfacing layer(s).Also, the manganese Hadfield steels usually call for different build-up layer material (with some manganese in it, such as Wearshield Mangjet) as well as pre-heat and interpass temp limits (200F-400F usually for the preheat, depending on the base material carbon and manganese content and a 500F MAX interpass temp limit so you don't cause the steel to become brittle).Lincoln Hardfacing Guide, C7.710http://www.lincolnelectric.com/asset...ture/C7710.pdfMaybe some Wearshield 44 as a top layer?  Listed as better spalling-resistance than Wearshield ABR.  Rc42 with one layer, up to Rc 48 with four layers.  Not the hardest or most abrasion resistant, a little bit softer so it retains some impact resistance.Hardfacing filler and selection is a bit more 'complicated' than welding up some mild steel or even alloy steel. If in doubt, maybe just call up Lincoln?  216-481-8100Oh, and you did check the clearance between the cutter teeth and those 'anvil' bars, to make sure your material build-up didn't close the gap too much, right?    And watch out for 'new' unworn teeth and how far out they project versus those worn teeth that don't project quite as far.  (I can't tell how much 'normal' gap/space there is between the teeth and the anvil in your pic, just an FYI in case you were caught up in the welding phase of things.)  If the old worn 'anvils' are still intact, maybe the customer can have you 'rebuild' them in your shop (at shop rates instead of mobile rates, if there is a difference for you).  Butter with some 7018, then some build-up layer(s) with the BU, and then a top layer or three with the Wearshield 44 or whatever.Last edited by MoonRise; 11-07-2012 at 02:01 PM.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:We are using the BU from experience, and the fact that we will be back in there, building up again. I am working with the manufacturer and my LWS for finding the best wire for the application at hand. I am going to try and build up the worn out anvils when we R&R them. There is plenty of clearance even with a layer of build up, we made sure of it. Right now this is an experiment, to see what works best in this machine, there are only about 30 of these in the country and the design is different than a regular tub or horizontal grinder.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
