Fabricated a proof of concept design/build for a large diameter TIG cup made of Teflon. The primary goal was to produce a size #19 cup made of Teflon for a 17-series torch configured with a standard gas lense. Assembly designed via SolidWorks parametric modeling software. We teamed with www.crossline-creations.com for the machining services. Cory, the owner/operator of Crossline-Creations and a great friend, is an extremely talented builder/machinist who designs and installs high-end metal and wood creations/exhibits/interactives for residential, commercial, and USG clients. Cory’s attention to detail and his impressive fleet of vintage, restored, and Made in USA lathes...mills...pin hole routers...belt sanders/grinders..finishing equipment...and wood working machines is most impressive. We are grateful to Cory for his outstanding craftsmanship on this proof-of-concept assembly. A single trial run with the PTFE cup on a 304SS and Gr 5 Ti .045 coupon achieved nice welds with minimal HT and electrode discoloration with a 1/2" stickout. In the future, we plan to conduct additional testing and evaluation of the current design on thin-walled Ti tubing using a CKW 18 series water cooled torch setup in our BLUE welders. Based on the results of the follow-on brassbound T&E, to include fluid flow visualization techniques a la the shadowgraph technique, we will improve upon the design. The journey continues. Reply:Is Teflon safe for high heat? I know the gases it gives off when heated will kill birds.Edit: scratch that, it's specifically from cooking with Teflon coated pans, which is in fact heated right under your food and in your face while cooking... Probably ok haha
Reply:Teflon releases fluorine gas when it melts. It will kill you but makes your teeth white.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PolytetrafluoroethyleneIt is used for some TIG gas lenses tho.Nice work @ManoKai. Dont breathe the flourine gas thoLast edited by Insaneride; 08-06-2016 at 11:15 AM.
Reply:I don't know why it's so important to re-invent the wheel....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:It was my impression reading the OP's post that this "proof of design" is just that, and the final product would be made of another material (?)

I've leaned hard on tig torches and the torches survived, but ceramic cups have discolored and broken without dropping or banging it into something. You might want to look into thermosetting polyimide or polybenzimidazole (PBI). Both of those have greater strength and stability at elevated temperatures and are moldable.

shovelon - yes. Threaded@ rlittman - am very familiar with PBI materials. Vespel runs $900-1k per foot for 1.5" rod. And the material present way more challenges in machinability. No thanks.Last edited by ManoKai; 08-09-2016 at 09:34 AM.Reason: sp3lling"Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
