Just recently set up a old (80's ish) Dialarc HF for tig. Looking to get a water cooler for it just wondering what would work best for it. Also having issues running aluminum with it. I cant get a clean weld. I dont have much experience running aluminum so it could just be that. Just looking for some advise.

Reply:So this was just a little practice piece i made up, its made out of 1/4. As you can see it has some type of corrosion in the weld but in not sure what it is. My machine was running right around 150 amps on AC and with the high frequency switch on continues. I Had a pure tungsten electrode and had 4043 filler rod and I was running with pure argon gas set at 30 CFH ish. heres some pictures. Have any suggestions. Attached Images

Reply:For a first timer with that machine, those are nice welds. A few things,Those outside corners slice the argon flow and sometimes are inherently difficult to maintain good shielding on. Your gas is too high, try 15 CFH. A gas lens helps too. I'm a cheapskate and I get away with 8-10 CFH with a 20 series torch and aluminum.The other and most obvious problem there is your setup. You're trying to weld .250 aluminum with 150 amps. So you sat over that 4043 filler and cooked the silicon out of it. Aluminum welding is odd in that higher amps allow you to get focused metal melting before the entire piece heats up. So you actually put less total heat in moving faster with more amps. I'd like to see the backside of that cone. Very little etching on the base metal. I wonder how much filler actually melted into it. Looks more like filler just sitting on top. So turn your amps up to 280 or max, stand on the pedal at the start, and use some 5356 filler.
