I am thinking about getting a Clarke 180EN MIG welder to replace my almost dead 110v cheapie. Does anyone know if you can change the polarity of the torch for doing either solid wire or flux core?ThanksRusty
Reply:Yes, it will do either wire - FCAW or GMAW.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:Yes, you sure can. Solid wire is GMAW, flux core is FCAW.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:I only asked because my cheapie 110v MIG said it could do either, but had no provision to change polarity. This was before I knew any better. I just couldn't find a manual, or a photo that showed how, or where you could change polarity on the 180EN.Thanks Again!Rusty
Reply:Most small 110v MIG welders must be changed internally. You open the side of the box, unscrew the cables, then re-attached them to the opposite poles. They aren't plug-n-play as you see most TIG/Stick welders. You must physically go inside of the machine and change it. What welder did you have?John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Mine even has a diagram to remind the operator what polarity you need for either solid wire with gas, and fluxcore wire.cricman
Reply:It is a 10+ Yr old 'Forge & Foundry' Mighty Mig 90 or 100. 110v 4 Voltage settings, dial for wire speed. Tip is constant hot. Gas conversion, which was nothing more then a regulator. Tyhe gas valve was in the handle, which always leaked. When it was working, it worked ok... just ok. I looked inside the covers, and I would have to really do some switching around to get to switch the polarity. cricman : Thanks for the info microzone : Thanks as wellAnything to watch out for on this model?RustyLast edited by rusty105; 07-18-2007 at 04:03 PM.
Reply:Welcome. The Clarke MIG welders are good units, you will be very happy. I've put my 130EN through it's paces for the last 2 years. It's gone through 6 - 2lb. rolls of wire and I'm currently on my 2nd roll of 11 lb. wire.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
