I have a Weldanpower with a bad B&S, I also have three CCK series Onans, one is a complete engine from I believe a Lincwelder. I would like to install the Onan on the Weldapower. The original B&S has a 12 volt starter and as I understand it, the Weldanpower has no way to be energized and start an Onan. If this is correct, what do I need to install a 12 volt starter on my Onan? I know I will need a starter, flywheel with starter ring gear, probably a starter bracket and possibly a different oil pan. Will I need the generator rotor etc. that goes under(behind) the flywheel? The Weldanpower does have a battery charger printed circuit board and related wiring. I'd like to use my existing engine and genset/welder if possible. I will probably sell off or trade all my excess parts to get whatever parts I need for the conversion.I would also like to convert the Onan to electronic ignition module(s), anyone done this? Parts sources? Is this worthwhile, or necessary? I am hoping for easier starting, better fuel economy, and greater reliability. If this has been posted elsewhere please let me know, I'm laid up after foot surgery so I have time to look it up. TIA, Shack
Reply:for all that work you are better off just rebuilding the B&S engine, whats wrong with it? the electronic module for the onan is over a $100.00 alone..Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:I agree with roadkillbobb. The electronic ignition idea would require a number of additional parts I can think of off the top of my head and I'm not sure it would just be a simple "bolt-on" conversion.Last edited by duaneb55; 04-07-2015 at 10:33 AM.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:As I should have stated in the original post, the B&S has a broken rod, the head has been off and the cylinder has water in it. Yes, I can buy a new rod, head, hone the cylinder buy rings, do a valve job and buy any other parts that may be missing. I don't know if the crank is usable, or the condition of any other internal parts. I did some research about electronic ignition modules, many are either too expensive or no longer made. I would put an electronic module on either engine, so that is a wash. There are several sites that explain how to buld an electronic ignition module utilizing Ford or GM electronic components that are relatively inexpensive and avalailable at any parts store. I would not be building a 100 point concours restoration, it will be to use. I will bow to your extensive experience base, and do some research on the B&S engine parts I need. Thx.
