Reply:sorry, i meant thermal arc.    i get them confused.    i've had my expeiences w/ miller on the circuit boards of my early stl's, and fought for an update board on one.    i realize he wants used, but my thoughts are, how do you get good used, when new isnt good.      its my belief the thermal arc stick welds better and comes w/ accessories, and is about 80% of the price as a bare miller 150.    i have two stls, and wouldn't sink a dime in them

Reply:I wouldn't let one/them go for the going used rate.    I think they might be worn out as far as stick goes (but manage to still get the job done).   I find the arc is too easily overcome by the molten flux in puddle, and a weak start.     I like them for tig, for what they are.     i bought the first one for 805.00 bare, and wouldn't pay the now 1200.   I did consider your interest, and i did do some calling around, pricing the thermal arc, and trying to confirm what i said, about believing the thermal arc stick welded better.    Seems most i talked to thought the miller sticked better.     I called the guy (who i trust) who told me the thermal sticked better, and asked him how he arrived at that,  he then told me demoed the 161 on 110 w/ 1/8 7018, and said it was better than the miller.    Anyway, everything i said in this thread so far, has come back on me, so I better shut up .      Chances are I'll use them for something till they both go, or cant make one work out of both.Last edited by 123weld; 10-15-2015 at 11:05 PM.
Reply:I have a nonfunctional maxstar 150 at my parents place but won't be going there until thanksgiving or so, if it can wait that long.
