I will be fineshing my aas in weld/fab in a year. Does anybody have some suggestions on how I can weld and travel a lot?read about road warriors but couldn't find that much personal account information. any other ideas and first hand experiances. do share
Reply:One of the jobs that come to mind is to become a steam path repair tech. Many call them bladers. They repair diaphragms, rotor blades, and steam glands on steam, gas, nuke turbines. I worked with many of them. They travel all over the world repair turbines. There are probably 1/2 doz. companies in the U.S. that have them. They can make $60 - $120K a year and work about 8 months per year. It is all tig welding, mostly with inconel. Its like any job, you would start at the bottom and work your way to the top. For the most part it is non union. You would start on night shift more than likely . If google steam path repair you will find a world of study. There is more to it than welding you would shap, blend, and fit parts along with welding. It would take some commitment from you and would take a few years to start making good money.
Reply:First hand experience. It's not as cool or glamorous as some try to make it sound. If you have or want a family it's generally not family or relationship friendly, it takes two very special kind of partners to make the road life work for a couple, let alone a family. Lots of 10+ hour days, 7 days a week for weeks on end.Tons of cash in a short time, as long as you're working, and you're going to need it for the ex wife and kids and the new girl friend. I'm not trying to dissuade you from anything but I'm over fifty, been married once and still am, and life on the road takes a different kind of person. You won't be golfing with your buddies this weekend or having chicken wings at the sports bar while watching the game either. You asked for first hand. I am skipping over the part about accommodations on the road, you know motels, camping, man camps. I don't think you would believe that part of the story. Any more questions?Last edited by gundog77; 10-25-2015 at 07:33 PM.
Reply:I agree with gundog that traveling is not the best choice for any career. I posted the info in the first post because that was the focus of the thread. I traveled for a lot of my career and am still married to the wife of my youth but that is not the norm and if you want to hang in the bars as you travel you will have a very small and sad life. You will find that when you are home that your friends have moved on. Then 10 years down the road you find that the men you work with are your circle of friend that all have the same problems. I made it a point to not hang with the guys I worked with. That made repercussions on the job sites at times but I feel that it improved my life and my family.  If you want to work, drink, eat ,sleep, swear, and have no one in particular in your life, traveling is great.  If you want a family and want to be a big part of their lives stay home. With that said it does not have to be that way. Most of use take the path of least resistance and on the road the above description is just that.
Reply:that sounds very cool. i would enjoy being a very versatile guy with skill sets that i could use alongside welding. are the 8 months out of the year a non stop type gig?
Reply:ive always thought that i could enjoy the road life. Im not married or have serious commitment to any special lady so that could work. what are the work scheduals like. I was on my way to becoming a roaddog in the audio world, but decided audio wasn'nt my gig and didnt really get to experiance it. is there partial time off or is it mostly work for 3 weeks straight and head home. Still trying to picture what a life like that could be, especially since im not a heavy drinker.

Reply:I get calls all the time for other shipyards.   Right now Nassco in San Diego and Bremerton are hiring contract welders.  So you get a subcontractor pay thats more than what the locals make plus per diem.   I know San Diego is around $35 an Hour and Bremerton is $39.  with per diem included.I know a lot of guys who do that go yard to yard then take other jobs when they need.   Its usually good pay but I prefer to find the nicer yards and settle in at higher wages.  San Diego still has another 6-7 years of work.Last edited by galencwi; 10-28-2015 at 11:25 PM.“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair
