Anyone work out of town and pull a camper?
Reply:Sometimes depending on per diem
Reply:Got a friend who pulls a fifth wheel. He just left SC to go to OR. Pulled it with him. The problem is find a campground that doesnt charg an arm and leg. The one he just left was over $400 per month. Its almost as cheap to stay at an extended stay hotel.AWS CWI/CWEASNT NDT Level 2 PT/MTAWS Certified Welder(aerospace)
ReplyWorking out of town.400 for a hotel for a month? The last time I spent ten bucks a night for a place to stay there was no shower only a dirty tub shared by the entire hotel.
Reply:You'll be lucky to get a room for a week for $400 if there's a big job in the area.
Reply:If you are looking at using a camper for wintertime quarters, be aware that they take a good quantity of propane to heat unless meticulously insulated. Not always the case though...had a jobsite camper parked down in Nebraska back in the late '70s for $2 a night with free electricity...bought a crapload of electric heaters. Also drove through Williston, N.Dak. a couple of weeks back and saw one "campground" offering climate controlled sheds to pull your camper/RV into...hate to think what they were going for.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:Spent the better part of 32 yrs chasing portable rock crushers all over the Pacific Northwest w/ a camper behind me. As Roy said they can be a challenge to heat and keep the plumbing from freezing. Best and cheapest method I used was find a spot w/ 240v power, run a separate cord inside to power a 4k to 5k watt heater, keep the holding tanks open and fill the toilet full twice and flush when you do the #2. Heat tape the water hose and wrap w/ the foam pipe insulation and Gorilla tape, which wasn't invented when I needed it!! If it gets down to +10* or colder, skirt it or winterize and go find that cheap motel room w/ the weekly rate.                                    MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:I need to update my other rv thread on the forum but why not put it out here. During the first 6 months of rv ownership I concede it to have been the biggest mistake I ever made. That being said I still romanticize that it is not the rv that is at fault but the poor execution of its idea. The propane heaters poor efficiency as well as being open underneath and having to be lightweight do make them warmer and cooler than a house. That being said I do not tolerate heat well and did not see the need to run the ac more than an hour in the evening and that was only on a handful of days so the guys running ac 24 7 are doing far worse than the rv. It is 48F degrees out and I can hear my neighbors ac kicking on! WTF!Kerosene does not bother me nor does the cold other if there was a way to keep the pipes from freezing I could live without central heat personally but a small heater will keep the rv warm and do away with blower motor noise.I think keeping the black water tank open is a bad idea but I am not an rv guru. I also can warn you that if an rv does not smell moldy that it is good to go. Mine was riddled with it and a 8 hour test with the most sensitive of sampling equipment concluded that the outside air quality was 4 times worse. I am still fighting for even a semi reasonable explanation of that one!
Reply:I pay an average of $250-$300/week (single) on extended stay hotels. I stayed in a camper with a guy that had one for a little while in Utah over the summer and it was fun for a week, but then I was over it. You can camp cheap and comfortable as long as the weather is nice, good luck after that. If you figure 1000$ a month/hotel and 350$ a month/campsite, that means you save $650 a month. That sounds allot until you consider how much it costs to own one in taxes, fees, and maintenance, it takes a while to pay itself off when you can only use it in decent weather (No storms or cold weather for me). Ive decided the best route is just talk your buddy into buying one, you have it when its warm, and he pays the taxes and takes the depreciation.Last edited by Davidbrown; 10-17-2015 at 05:47 PM.Constant Current Weldor.
Reply:I don't know if saving is the point of an rv for this instance. Mine is a pos and near every day I wish it would go up in a fiery ball but today I was getting it ready for weekend use and I realized I missed the thing while it was back at the factory. I don't recommend anyone ever buy one I am just stuck with it now and am going to make the most of it. I thought about squeezing as many people as possible inside with the landing legs up and having people on opposite ends alternately jump up and down to see if we could get a teeter totter action going. It might make a funny video. To me the beauty of the rv is it is your own toilet and if work shuts down where you are you have no house to sell, you just ease on down the road. My intent was to live in one but I don't know if that will ever work out.Last edited by mikecwik; 10-17-2015 at 06:04 PM.

Reply:I have used a 34ft 5th wheel for work for the past 11 years. It will not save you any money. Now that I said that , I like having it because I feel like it is home. My wife will only go out of town on a job if I take the 5er. I take my dog all the time in the 5er. My perdium has paid for the camper so even though it has not saved me any money I have something to show for the perdium other than a stack of motel receipts.  I do not take it if the weather is going to get below  25 degrees. Below that temp it just is not worth the hassle . I have paid anywhere from $200 for 6 weeks to $500 a month plus electric. If I am going on a short job of a week or 2 I do not take the camper. The cost per day or week makes it not worth the extra money to pull it there and back and when I take it I usually have to get there a day before work starts and leave the day after it ends.
Reply:Staying in a 3 star motel working 4-10's and then going home for 3 days ( about 100/ miles away from home) paying $50.00/ nite..... If it was summer I would stay in a campground for $35.00/ nite......With a trailer you have a nice kitchen , fridge, my trailer also has a full size bathroom/shower.. The best way to book a hotel is priceline name your own price option on line........
