Ring roller question

Hi All,Recently bought a HF ring roller.  I have a question that I think I know the answer to bought I want comfirmation from someone who owns one...Do all three of the rollers actually roll?  On mine, the one that is hooked to the tension adjuster does not roll.  I think this is a problem.   But I'd like to hear from others before I take the think back.
Reply:the one on the tensioner is a free roller. the others are gear driven.never argue with an idiot. he will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
Reply:All 3 rollers should be able to spin- if the top one is stuck, then there is something wrong. Usually only the two bottom ones are driven, that is the spin when you turn the crank. The top one should freewheel, though, and spin when the metal in it is dragging it around. But what do you expect for $50?The really good rolls, the ones that cost 20 grand or so, use a separate hydraulic motor for each roll. So all three spin real good.
Reply:Well I didn't expect it to work as nice as a $20k roller.  But I did expect it to work.I'll be taking it back since the tension roller does not turn.  The top and the other roller are gear driven and they spin nicely though.  I will be opening the box before I leave as well....
Reply:I'd like to try one of the ring rollers for a one-off application (use the tool once and throw it away).  Anyone have the part number or a link for this item?-Heath

Reply:Went to HF today and exchanged the roller.  New one work much better.  All three rollers actually roll!
Reply:I purchased the H F ring roller about a year ago and was not satisfied with it so I built my own. Here's some pics. Attached ImagesDoing what I like

ReplyRing roller questionopwri,I like what you have done with this.  What kind of material did you use for the dies?
Reply:I used 1\4" wall pipe X 3" dia.X 2 1\2" long with 1\4" plugs welded in the ends then bored 5\8" holes for axles used grade 8 bolts for axles. It's not for big productions but it does what I need to make rings I also may change the handle to a wheel type later. The base is 5" channel 2" channel for the roller supports the rest of the frame is 1\4" X 2" I shortened the handle to about 13". Any other info.I can help you with let me know.Doing what I like

Reply:Never having seen one of this I hope you dont mind me asking a few questions for clarification etc.Is this the concept of how this thing works?  You tighten the top bolt down to increase the downward pressure on the flat steel thru the top roller.  Once tight you turn the crank. Due to the pressure on things; turning the crank makes the flat stock move thru the rollers.  Since downward pressure of the top roller resides in the gap between the two bottom rollers, this forces the bend.ok, now "if" I got the concpet right, how do you create different diamater rings? Spreading the lower rollers further apart?  Installing smaller/larger rollers?  Increasing the downward pressure on the top roller?  All of the above? If I understand this right, looks like something like this could be made to use with angle iron. As long as the verticle portion of the angle iron (your roll on the horizontal portion) is not taller than than the distance from the top of the roller to the edge of the rollers axle. Of course the bracket that holds the roller would have to have a space for the verticle portion of the angle iron to fit between it and the roller itself.   Damn does this make since at all?Last edited by coachgeo; 01-22-2006 at 07:18 PM.

Reply:That 3 legged monster is a homemade ground clamp used on pipelines when welding. You place the front leg into the bevel of the pipe, on the top tack and the other 2 legs sit on the top of the pipe. Usually the back 2 legs have tape or some kind of insulation on them. Helps to keep from getting arc stricks on the pipe. Arc stricks on the pipe will get you a pay check REAL quick.
Reply:just built myself a ring roller, similar to last months post on ring rollers.  I needed it to make some foot rings for some barstools i made.  I got some dies made from the machine shop, but when i bend the tubing, the tubing twists, and i get this crazy roller coaster like finished product.  Does anyone know why the tube is twisting in the dies, and what i can do to fix it?  Thanks for your help.
