looking for personal experiences, your opinions on solar powered with battery backup versus completely battery poweredthanks for any info
Reply:Why don't you look for a hood with features that you like and that is comfortable to you first before deciding what type of power it has.
Reply:I prefer solar. When I use my friends battery powered, I always forget to turn it on.
Reply:I prefer solar also. I use to have a Hobart blue flame helmet, the batteries leaked ruining the electronics in it.

Reply:I like my solar Optrel. Just can see the point of battery power if they auto-off but don't auto-on.Don't see any advantage to not solar. Reply:I have a solar and battery powered helmet and use the solar most because it is not as heavy ( Jackson = battery, Hobart = solar) The Hobart is fixed 10 and the Jackson has variable shade and sensitivity plus the batteries and it is more "front heavy" than the Hobart.Last edited by Jackson; 03-14-2011 at 11:35 AM.

Reply:solar ones are good. but I personally like the battery ones. The reason is the battery ones seem more clear and easier to see out of with battery ones.The thing I hate though about battery ones is you always has to turn on your helmet to welding mig,tig,stick or you would get flashed by super bright greenish light in your eyes. It really blinds you and hurts your eyes for a long time.

Reply:In the long run a replaceable battery powered helmet is the best option if your looking for longer life in a helmet. All welding helmets have batteries, but solar helmets (non replaceable batteries) have a lifetime of 5 years give or take (from my experience). In a battery powered helmet such as a Speedglas or a Jackson, having the option of replacing your batteries is giving you a better chance of keeping your helmet operational for a long period of time by completely replacing the power source with a fresh one.The disadvantage to buying a battery powered helmet is they tend to only be in the higher end helmets.http://www.youweld.com

Reply:Solar-powered (photovoltaic) technology is now quite mature in the welding sector, and is widely used across most brands of auto-darkening filter (ADF) welding helmet. All ADF welding helmets have a battery of some kind, but those not marketed as 'battery-powered' or 'battery-assisted' tend to be categorised as 'solar-powered' and depend on a low-voltage rechargeable cell, which is topped-up by the photovoltaic panel to provide an acceptable service life. The models available with better performance (like the 3M SpeedGlas, or the Weldability Phantom XL) tend to be 'battery-assisted' and include a lithium coin (or similar) cell to increase the voltage and therefore improve the performance of the ADF.
