Reply:I just came across the Everlast name about a week ago. I was looking close at Riland Tig and plasmabut I am very interested now in the PowerMaster 226 multifunction. Working on getting enough positive reinforcement to commit, as I've heard complexity of multipurpose may lead to a significantly greater chance of failure than dedicated machines.  Welcome any input on this? Thanks, John
Reply:Anytime you add components and extra features,  you have a slightly greater chance of something going wrong if all things are equal.   For example,  a basic scratch start TIG machine is often more reliable than one with high frequency, AC, up slope, and down slope controls. One with basic AC, HF, upslope and downslope controls is often more reliable than one with all those features plus wave form control, and pulse.  Each component adds a slighlty higher chance of failure.  That's the theory. Now, for the reality.  How much greater risk do you have?  Is it an acceptable risk?  You'll see inverter machines plastered all over with all sorts of features and options, name brand and other wise.  Typically, the more features, the greater the price as well.  Surely people would be better off paying for the simplest, cheapest machine?  Right?  Well, now, that depends upon your needs and how acceptable the small amount of added risk is.   Adding a Plasma unit to a unit greatly improves a units versatility and convenience.  It can reduce input costs and reduce the amount of outlets needed in a small shop or garage.  It can increase portability, while decreasing shop footprint.  The plasma, tig, stick combination units ARE very popular for those reasons and the risk of problems are still very small.  For the money, the new PowerMaster 256 has actually proven to be the most popular model between the 226 and the 256.  It isn't even on the old site, and already it is more popular.  The new site "hopefully" will be up this week...I have said it before.  We will see.  In my opinion, the added risk is negligible, from our multi process machines.  The 256 has IGBT modules from Infineon sourced directly from the German company.  These are what give the units their power.  No chinese, clone after market source.  These are genuine modules straight from Infineon.  Other parts are quality, featuring many name brand companies.Last edited by lugweld; 01-23-2010 at 02:33 PM.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Thank you for your response, well stated.  The multipurpose would be ideal for me but nothing else till now evoked enough confidence to pursue it.  My only complaint with Everlast is the difficulty I had in  finding them. The name never came up on any of my general welding related searches, I finally saw the name mentioned by someone after perusing numerous forums.  After knocking around all the debate over American / Chinese - original / clone - dedicated / multi - cost / value... etc, I am feeling very comfortable so far with this path.  Of course now there's the Powermaster 256 you mentioned. I see it here on a Everlast Generators Canada web site for about $1900, out of stock, and no info. My point, I wouldn't have known to look unless someone like you mentions it on one of these forums.  The 226 specs are right on but now I have to see what the + $300 256 will do for me. I ended up on this thread because I saw the word, Everlast specials. I appreciate your time, not an Everlast owner yet but big fan.
Reply:Many more features for the 256 and a better perfomance with IGBT modules.  Wait a day or two and the new site will be up.  You can see the difference.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT

Reply:With the newer bobcats, I don't think so.  They have cleaned up their power relatively well.  Our position on running on generators is to make sure you have the proper volts coming and that the machine should put out a fairly clean sine wave.  Even though our units put out a "squarewave" its not so good for the input side.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
