I have been given the job of coming up with one of these in Stainless. This photo was taken from a custom built bakery machine which is operating somewhere on the Eastern seaboard.It is not an off the shelf item. It is used in the production of dinner rolls. Doughballs are formed in another part of the machine and fed onto this Separater drum by the paddles off to the side. I've already built the paddle sections in UHMW and they are being installed in the machine. The Separator drum has one cutout feeding to the front and one cutout feeding to the rear. Diameter is 15". I'm building this Separator Drum for a Bakery Equipment supply company which builds all kinds of one-off units. It is a fun company to work for as the work is never boring, sometimes in UHMW, sometimes in hardwood and often in Stainless.  The owner of the company knows I like this kind of job and will take the time necessary to figure it out.In the past he has tried hiring larger Machine Shops to do this kind of thing but it just doesn't work out well at $175 per hour. Not only is it expensive, the workers there are used to producing large volumes of fairly straight forward work in short periods of time, so they do not do well with one-offs.The trick will be in getting the shapes correct so that everything times out perfectly, that is the dough ball has to roll out of the Separator at the perfect time.First thing will be to build a mock up in Mild steel, see if it works (it won't) then make changes to get the thing functioning before making the final version in Stainless.The TIG/Stick/plasma functions will all come in handy for this job. Reply:I;m Like you Worn, I love the one off weird stuff that seems impossible to design/figure out.  I love the tinker time.  I lose money on some and make money on the others, but it is a lot of fun always.  I used to do "creative engineering" at a cement plant for admixtures and varying the flyash component to meet different concrete design specs.  Was a ton of fun trying to time the dump to the belt and making sure the water then rinsed it off well enough so the next mix that was loaded was not tainted by the one that just ran.  I got to "play" with piezo weight cells, belt, conveyers, hoppers and gates and all kinds of whisker switches and IR senesors to get it to do what we wanted.  I miss those days, havent done any of that since before I left for Iraq and ended up getting sick and disabled.  Thanks for the good memory.I'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:Very sorry to hear about your health problems and disability, I hope you are getting some good care and compensation for this.I guess we must both be weird people, getting satisfaction from these strange jobs. Got started on this one tonight, I couldn't wait. I'll post some photos of the mock up and the final product when I get it together.The first thing I made use of was my Hokey home made cordless drill driven weld positioner and the plasma cutter to cut two perfect 15" discs. Reply:Yaeh, Good medical care, no compensation.  Could not prove where I got sick, so it must be my fault, right?  Crap happens, so I am not surprised.  Good luck on the build, I woulda used my plasma table for the rounds, but I am lazy since we got that machine.  We bought it a few years ago on a lark to play with and it has made me a good little bit of cash and kept me mildly entertained the rest of the time.  My wife is a shop rat too so I got a helper, and a playmate in the shop when she feels like playing.  In addition to practical stuff the plasma table does art and stuff for gates and fences, which are real big here in the Southern Horse farm area of Florida.  So in addition to the root rake tine, and heavy equip patches it makes it also does light arty fartsy stuff for a decent little profit.  I work with a couple of gate and fence guys and supply them the art and they do the install, so I have no travel or liability if it falls down or doesnt open when they push the button on a saturday night.  I like it that way.  I just do what I can in the shop when I feel well, and get to it when I can.  Most of my customers can live with my schedule, so it's never a deadline or hurry up thing for me.  I dont do deadlines, or impatient customers well, so if I think they are gonna be a pain in my Butt, I pass em on down the line quick.    Keep postin pics of your new project.BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
