i have a 1988 isuzu rodeo and i got a small hobby welder .... i got it from my work (pepboys) and its a 90 amp VAPOR brand welderi have a power converter that is 400watts and i use that for when i go storm chasing .. i know that is not any were near big enough for a welder to be ran but in the past i had a truck with 4 batteries in it and was running 2 alternators each rated at 320 amps to handle the car audio system i had ... lots of 0 gauge wire.  any who ... this welder has a 110 plug and i was wondering how i can hook it up some how to run off the rodeo ... i know the truck would have to be running when using the welder but how do i need to wire it up? do i need dual batteries?  how do i get the 12 system to a 110 volt system?lots of questions here ... i see oil field trucks with welders on them and they dont have a generator to run them and they are hooked up to the truck some how ... any one know how they do this?
Reply:They are hydraulic say10000 dollars . Buy the 3000 watt inverter from your Pep Boys good to go!
Reply:they sell welders you hook up to the belts in your truck for welding.almost like a second alternator, but it is a welding unit.. .not the cheapest way, but it depends how much welding your doing out on the trails..Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:Most welder won't run on modified sine wave inverters.  I.e. pep boys ones.   You need a true sine wave inverter.  In a size to run a welder you need prob 3000 watts plus.  Those are expensive.  Return that welder and but my Goweld in my Sig.   It will run off 2 automotive batteries and it is MIG/flux core, which is much easier to learn/use than stick. Esp if you don't know how to weld.Last edited by soutthpaw; 01-06-2015 at 09:56 AM.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:So you got a 90 amp FC welder and now want to make it portable by running an inverter off your car battery system in your Rodeo.  Not even sure where to start as this does not seem to make a whole lot of sense IMO.  I also doubt that the battery/alternator in your Rodeo will be able to make enough power to run the welder for very long anyway.    Anyhow good luck on your project.  Sometimes I get a little too creative with my idea and need to be brought back down to earth.  This might fall into that category as you will probably be better off to return the 90 amp welder and take that money along with what you were going to spend on the inverter and buy a Hobart 140 mig or similar.  At least then you would have something of value that would weld sheet metal without all the spatter.
Reply:The welding machines you see on the trucks do have a generator- it is built into the welder. They are Engine Drive Welding machines.http://www.millerwelds.com/products/enginedriven/What exactly do you see yourself needing a welder for the Rodeo?  As already mentioned, the Inverter route is not practical.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:it would just be for fun and it out offroading or in an area that has no power i could still weld if i need to.  but it looks to be A LOT more complex than i thought ... ill just stick to extension cords for now now in that same breath ... how far of an extension cord could i run before i get too long for the welder to work as it should.
Reply:Originally Posted by mad welder 4Yes this is true, they run like arse off modified sine wave. The modified sine wave will heat up the welding transformer a lot worse than regular power. Modified sine wave reduces actual work done by an inductive device such as a motor or transformer by about 1/3. So with modified sine wave you just turned your 90 amp welder into a 50 or 60 amp welder. You would have to have a pure sine wave inverter and they are expensive. I picked up a used 1000 watt pure sine wave inverter for $180, the one I bought is over $600 new. I wanted a bigger used one but none were to be found. You wouldn't want regular automotive batteries to power it, you would want deep cycle starting batteries at the very least.Inverters are infamous for burning out battery chargers so that is why I put it on my generator.

Reply:I had a miller suitcase extreme come into the shop with a shattered case. Found out it had been run over by a Grade-all. It still worked. Straightened out the metal frame and mounted in a new case and it was good to go. There are several options for back country welding. They make an alternator Style stick welder that's belt driven. Or a ready welder and the go welder.Hobart has the trex which is a battery operated flux core welder. It is about the size of a jump starter. Keep digging and stop by the 4 wheel off road shops for ideas. Or find a 4 wheel club to ask what they use.
Reply:Originally Posted by mad welder 4I actually bought the inverter to install on my suburban but ended up not doing it. It sat on a shelf for a while. I picked up this inverter after I read that modified sine wave kills triac type chargers (in everything these days). Then I realized how much the fuel economy on that 7kw B&S sucked so want to try and not run the engine for tiny loads such as charging a cell phone, or charging a drill battery, running a power drill, running my small sub 1hp air compressor, using a small drop light and other small items. The generator came with a dead battery. I had been pull starting it. I absolutely hated the way the battery was mounted from the factory and was not going to put another one in its place. I had a spare optima not being used.So I put the 2 together.I did all this when gas was 3.50/gal, I know it is not that expensive any more but I know next time when gas gets expensive again it will blast past $4/gal.

Reply:True sine wave inverters are expensive. My pure sine wave inverter was over $600 when new.Its a lot heavier than the cheap modified sine wave junk and it has a huge fan. I am pretty sure mine is 1000 watts or 1000 VA sustained.I won't be plugging the welder into it.I cant get a clear answer if the large very expensive whole home inverters will even handle a welder.  Originally Posted by Broccoli1Do you charge the Optima with a trickle charger from the wall?
