I posted this probably in wrong section so try here. My recent purchase is a 1967 Idealarc ac/dc tombstone welder. I took all the covers off- cleaned it good. Inside was very clean as it was. I turned it on to let fan run a short while to see if was noisy.. Got couple questions: keep in mind all covers are off- The switch shows small amount of arcing inside as the contacts are touched. both when switched to ON and OFF. This normal? you would never see this when covers are on. Also: what or how do I check the two lead plugs to see volts are up to par, using a multi-meter. I guess since covers off would be the two heavy flat straps. looking for process and what to check- Thanks! P.S. I know Caution is the up most importance with covers off- maybe it is a no-no to even check this way?
Reply:Arcing when turning on might indicate the switch is worn and closing to slow.Arc when turned off may be normal. Handle should move then contacts should snap real fast to the on or off position. Best place to test output voltage is at the weld terminals out side the case.Output voltage will depend on line voltage and model of welder. Open circuit voltage will be around 70 to 72 volts. newer machines. older machines may be around 80 volts.
