Reply:Originally Posted by milwironI use- http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=94336It works fine. Much better than the $300.00 Optrel I had. The Optrel was almost useless with my bifocals because of glare and I was always getting flashed.
Reply:I've purchased 4 of their solar powered helmets, the first one 3 years ago.  The first two I bought for myself and my some for welding project in my home shop,  I added two more when my neighbor kids wanted me to teach them to weld.  They all work and quite well at that.  The auto-darkening lens has made a marked improvement on my welding and the helmet is light and comfortable for the welding that I do.  For the $49 I spent they've more than paid for themselves.  An added benefit is the replaceable clear plastic lens covers they use - they're always in stock and very inexpensive. One thing about auto-darkening helmets, they make a world of difference to young people just starting out.  The kids I've been working with initially had to use some old, non-auto-darkening helmet I had around.  They found it so difficult to use they almost gave up trying.  I had them alternate with my sons auto-darkening helmet, whoever was welding used it.  They were all welding excellent MIG beads in less that 20 minutes - both but and fillet welds!  With the new ones I got a HF they really wend to town.  Now I just have to find a way to pay for the gas and wire ;-)Last edited by reefera4m; 02-26-2010 at 12:44 AM.
Reply:The place where I teach sometimes bought Jackson EQC's (14 of them). There are NO longer any working except for one. After that we bought a couple of dozen blue flame hoods. I had been using one for a year or so. There are still blue flame hoods in the trailer. They do have variations in quality. Some areas of the lens are different shades. But overall still working. For the money I think they are great. I just returned one with the extended warranty because of the lens issue but havent opened the new one to see how it is. I still like my huntsman 490P the best. It autodarkens through the use of a precognitave (sp) control unit housed within the headband. The control unit sends electrical impulses to my neck and hands precisely timed to allow me to nod my head a fraction of a second before striking an arc. In grinding mode, another electrical impulse is sent to the left or right hand giving instruction to slide the dark lens out of the way.Gerald Austinwww.weldingdata.com

Reply:i dont own one but I had a chance to use a Harbor Freight when i miged at my friends place the other day and the helmet worked pretty good. I can still see. But this probly dont mean much because you would need to use it over a long time to tell.
Reply:As long as your in the market....might as well save a few $$$$$$$http://www.harborfreightusa.com/usa/...e=magurl3.htmlAt $35 it's a good investment in a tote around extra helmet.I've got that one...The "Blue Flame" one...and a couple of high dollar ones... That one lays around the shop and I grab it for quick fixes and lay it down again....I like the Blue Flame one...but I don't worry about the solid black one or the Blue Flame one...like I do the pretty ones..LOLFWIW... The black one came in a box with a used mig I bought and it was under the mangled welder in the trashed packaging when I got it...it still functions just fine...

Reply:I bought a HF Blue Flame autodarkening helmet about two years ago on sale for $49.  It has worked fine, but I don't weld as much as most folks on this forum.Anyway, where I work I noticed one of the professional welders was using a blue flame helmet just like mine. I asked him about it and he preferred it to the high dollar Miller auto darkening helmet the company had supplied him.  He found it to be more comfortable due to its lightweight. Reply:I have 2 of these helmets and my oldest son uses one to learn to weld.  My Mom bought one so she could learn to weld as well.  Cant beat the price!
Reply:I too have two of the HF hoods and have not had any problems. The first one I bought has been with me for 5 years and still have not had to replace the batteries. The second one is about two years old and works very well. My nieghbor bought one and he took it back the next day since it would not work. I guess it is luck of the draw with their hoods.
Reply:Just a heads up,For there sidewalk sale this 13-15 they are featuring the 46092 hood for $34.99, when you add the 20% off coupon on top of it, that will bring it to the low price of $28+ tax.......not a bad deal for a spare hood. SQUARE WAVE 175 TIG   DUAL MIG 151

Reply:I've posted here about how my HF large-window (Eagle) hood has occasionally flashed me no matter how long I set it in sunlight. When I lift it off the windowsill, the red low-battery warning led soon fades to black. Replacing the battery didn't help.I previously had HF's least expensive hood, 46092, plain black. It worked fine but I couldn't see out the little window using bifocals.Today I looked again at the blue flame hood. On sale it is only $5 more than the plain black one. I just noticed its window is larger (taller) than the black hood. After trying it on I concluded its intermediate-size window IS large enough to use with bifocals. So I bought it, @ $40 after 20% coupon. (Thanks Fastopel!!!)I see good reviews here for this blue flame helmet. Reply:The Eagle hoods have been 'catalog-only' for a while now. They must be closing them out.I gave up on mine and bought the blue flame model last weekend. No matter how much sun it saw, the low battery warning would fade to black in a few seconds. Replacing the battery didn't help. They must have gotten in a bad batch.

Reply:The first one I bought 6 months ago works great. I just ordered another, for parts if needed. I'll be curious to see if HF honors that price.
Reply:That link is on at least 3 welding sites and has been for a day...If they wouldn't honor that price..I'm pretty sure someone has found out by now and would comment.I've never seen that helmet in my own local HF store....so it may be an internet only item. If anyone finds it in a local store print the web page (to show the store) & let everyone else know how that goes. One ordered shipped is $18.86Two ordered shipped is $31.73 -or- $15.87 ea.Anyway you slice it...that's a deal since that helmet has the same specs as their other hoods. Good Luck & let everyone know if they fail to honor that posted price..

Reply:Very interesting:I just bought one for the same $18.86 (shipped to TX for $6.99).No tax was added even though there are stores in TX.  Usually internet orders have added tax if there is a store in state.  I'll be plesantly suprised if it arrives in one piece and then lives up to all the hype. Thanks for the tip!
