HF Trailers

Not really a welding question so I hope this is OK.I'm considering the purchase of a HF trailer.  I gave my pickup to my boy and am now driving a Jeep Wrangler which is great...but.  I no longer have a way to transport materials like plywood, boards, or thanks to you guys, metal. So I am consdering the purchase of a lightweight trailer to move stuff from point A to the house, or very rarely, transport my Harley Road Glide someplace.  I have a larger trailer, and getting it going behind the Jeep isn't an issue.  Stopping on the other hand can be sort of an adventure so I'm looking to go lighter.  Also, the wife can take the riding mower wherever she wishes behind her Jeep which is a plus.I'm considering model #94564 which has a 1700 pound capacity.  4x8 in dimension and costs $449, but after the coupon should be had for around $360 bucks.Anyone with any experience on this?  All input is welcome!  Thanks!

Reply:15 years ago I got the little HF 3.3 x 4 ft trailer to use as a Jeep trailer, for camping trips where I might realistically have to unhitch the trailer and turn it around separately from my Trooper to get back out of an impossible spot. BTDT!  Yes it is tiny but it was ideal for that application. Then when I needed a larger utility trailer that didn't exceed my tow vehicle's capacity (by that time a Subaru, but with the same 2000 lb tow limit), I looked hard at the HF trailers. Instead I decided on a light 4 x 8 trailer from Home Depot. I think the build quality is better, all welded from the start. Also the sides and tailgate are better than I could devise. it weighs a little more than HF's , 400 lbs with flat floor or 500 lbs with the sides on. But the real advantage is the tongue extends and the front 'tailgate' can lay flat on it making the rig long enough, with both tailgates down, to carry 16 ft material. Here's the biggest load, right at the trailer's capacity, 2100 lbs GVW. I covered 100 miles in 110 degree weather then another hundred miles the next day. The brand name on Home Depot's trailer is Snow Bear, from Montreal or someplace, and I assume it is marketed in the East as a snowmobile trailer. I paid $600 five years ago.If you don't need the weight capacity, then a trailer with 8 inch tires will be a lot easier to get the Harley or mower loaded.
Reply:Good to know you were happy with yours, and if the pics are any sign, they are easily modified. Will they let you use a coupon on a sale item?
Reply:California,I looked at the HD trailers today but didn't see any Snow Bear models as you show.  Nice looking trailer and I like the built in expandability!I built a homemade trailer from one similar to what you towed behind your Jeep, but I used a Sears car topper and towed it behind two different Gold Wings.  It worked great loaded, but bounced like you know what empty.  LOLI'll be on the lookout for one of those also.  I cruise craigslist constantly.  Thanks for the input.
Reply:I bought their 40x48 trailer for my ATV.We beat the snot out of it hauling approx 40 tons of rock and crusher run.We had the upgraded 12" wheels. On thing that happened is we lost a bearing cap which my son made a new one out of a detergent bottle cap.The trailer worked flawlessly.

Reply:The original pile was 60 ton.We had moved a few tractor loader bucket fulls but were rutting up the trail so we had to resort to the ATV and trailer. We were repairing a snowmobile trail for my son's Boy Scout Eagle project.Initially we were overloading the trailer since the Polaris 700 was breaking all 4 tires loose on a gravel hill.Once we got the proper weight figured out I bet we were carrying between 700 & 800 lbs per load. The trailer would hold more than we could pull.We mainly use it for hauling firewood out of places we cannot get with the Kubota and 5x8 trailer.
