Hey guysWell I picked up a new saw on Tuesday with a 20% off coupon... I should have paid more attention to the fact that one end of the box before I even opened it was clearly soaked in oil (and had been for some time). Got it open and about half of it all was coated in oil!Anyway after assembling and cleaning everything up... thinking "oh, good ole' Harbor Freight" at least I don't think it will start rusting on me any time soon... anyway the gasket to the gear box cover seemed to be a little tweaked when I took it apart so that's what I attributed it to. I cleaned out the inside of the box and put a fresh dump of new oil in. After letting it sit and coming back from dinner I noticed a small puddle of fresh oil about 2" around on the floor! Long story short... there is a pinhole leak THROUGH the casting on the back of the gear box, behind the drive wheel! Everything else seems fine so far on this saw, but I have not used it yet to cut. Just been a lot of unloaded running to find this dang leak.So... my question is guys... what would be the best way to plug this up? Clean it up and tack it with my 110v Lincoln mig? Or being it's cast would I be better off cleaning it up and pushing some black RTV silicone that I use on the rear diff of my F250? Or ... ?Any ideas would be much appreciated... thanks guys!!  Attached ImagesLast edited by ryanPSD; 05-21-2010 at 12:54 AM.- RyanLincoln Weld-Pak 140HDHypertherm Powermax 30HF 4x6 bandsawHF 21gal compressorCraftsman Commercial drill press4.5" Craftsman Professional angle grinder4.5" HF angle grinderOld benchtop table saw with a cutoff wheel and sawzall
Reply:Take it back.If not I'd use an adhesive.
Reply:Take it back is my first thought, I had to on mine.   had broken parts. If not, JB weld is your friend.Come try it out and stay a while.
Reply:Just take it back.Sometimes at HF it takes a couple of tries before you get an item that was built to spec.
Reply:Thanks guys... yeah after thinking about it I will probably just try and exchange it. I was a little frustrated after cleaning it all up only to find that again and just wanted to make it work. I'm leaving Sunday for a 7 day cruise   so I'll take care of this after I get back and keep anyone interested posted..... and if I decide to just patch it (probably won't though) I'll see about fixing it up thanks to you guys... thanks again!- RyanLincoln Weld-Pak 140HDHypertherm Powermax 30HF 4x6 bandsawHF 21gal compressorCraftsman Commercial drill press4.5" Craftsman Professional angle grinder4.5" HF angle grinderOld benchtop table saw with a cutoff wheel and sawzall
Reply:Ok after 7 days of fun and beer and doing whatever I want  I just got out to HF today and got a new saw... WOW... I didn't think much of the overall condition of the first saw. It wasn't horrible but I guess I just figured it was regular HF quality... the new one is 10 times better all around and is oil free   got it all built tonight and seems to run good. Already got two new non-HF bimetal blades and I just need to put new oil in it and will hopefully give it a good run soon! Thanks again guys... I was still on the verge of thinking of just patching up the old one but so much happier now that I got a "good" new one.- RyanLincoln Weld-Pak 140HDHypertherm Powermax 30HF 4x6 bandsawHF 21gal compressorCraftsman Commercial drill press4.5" Craftsman Professional angle grinder4.5" HF angle grinderOld benchtop table saw with a cutoff wheel and sawzall
Reply:Just got one too. Only problem with mine is sand in the gear box like others have found. Drained and rinsed it out with WD40. Then blew it out with compressed air and refilled with Mobile 1 gear oil.
