My black water tank on my motorhome is cracked. I'm thinking about trying to repair it and have found that the plastic welders range anywhere from HF $30 to others at $300. Though I don't know for sure what material the tank is made of (I'm thinking PP) I am looking for some advice. Obviously, I'd want the tank to be leak free and the weld probably wouldn't be under much load or pressure. Any thoughts??Thanks for any help you could provide!Lincoln TIG 185 / MIG 200"Learning a bit more everyday"
Reply:I have several plastic welders, I was making fish filters for a while using polyethelyne barrels..I also welded pvc and some other plastics for repair. I bought a leister ( expensive) and the harbor unit with air supply built into it for about $75.00 a few years back. most plastic is marked what type it is, but if you google plastic welding theres a huge supply of info out thre..just like metal welding CLEAN CLEAN the surfaces...
Reply:I'd sooner patch it with an epoxy adhesive.
Reply:I've considered epoxy adhesives but wasn't sure if it would "stick" to the tank. Thanks for the sugestion - I'll try a test patch to see if it works.Lincoln TIG 185 / MIG 200"Learning a bit more everyday"

Reply:Well my project turned out pretty good. I ended up buying the harbor freight $60 dollar welder and had pretty good luck with it. I made the assumption that the tank was made out of ABS and used the appropriate filler. Roadkillbobb was dead on when he said that the surface had to be clean. I did a leak test after it was all welded up and had a few leaks. Rather than try and reweld I took Supe's suggestion of using an epoxy sealer over the top of the welded area. The second leak test was good and now I'm a happy camper! My only wish would have been that I would have seen jsfab's post about the friction weld technique - way cool!
