Portable Garage

I am considering one of the fabric garages that are supported with steel poles.  Has anyone used one of these portable garages and if so how did it hold up?  I plan to use it for about 10 years or so.  I know HF has one but there are others.  Anyone know who makes a good one?thanks for the helpthumbsGarySouderton, Pa.
Reply:I had a few hf garages there good for about 3 years thrn the fabric shreds and the poles rote through
Reply:I bought one at Sam's Club it lasted 7 years. I also looked at one at Tractor Supply that looked very good for the price. It was on sell for $199.99 (12X26) normally $299.99. The one at Sam's was $189.99 (10X20)
Reply:get a shelterlogic! or clearspan, look em up on ebay. they are both excellent quality and will last you a while-NateMiller Trailblazer 302gMiller Spoolmatic 30aLN-25 x 2Idealarc SP200Hypertherm Powermax 600
Reply:I got the HF 20 x 20 tarp-canopy carport. The ball-bungees that attach the tarp to the frame started to rot immediately. After a year, every time I went to the ranch I found several rotted bungees on the ground. I replaced the bad ones with their similar, longer black ones sold in four packs but I didn't keep up with it fast enough, and the second winter the tarp tore from unequal stresses caused by too many bungees missing. By that time the tarp also looked poor, clearly more transparent than when new.I think this tarp carport is more suitable for an event -  an annual camping trip or something, or maybe a year of parking while you build a new home - and not as long term storage. It's structure, made of conduit, is fine so long as you anchor it to the ground properly.I'm about to buy another tarp for it, maybe from Northern Tool this time. Also a spool of elastic cord to make my own tiedowns. Note rope isn't suitable, the tiedowns need to stretch and distribute wind stress.
Reply:For one that will last for 10 years you will need to increase your budget 10 fold. http://www.alaskastructures.com/
Reply:The Burning Man crowd swears by the Costco version - they stay it's different from the others you mentioned but couldn't say myself. $180 I think. Easy up and adequet.

Reply:Gary, the quality of all of them is about the same.  I bought a couple for covering boats and stuff in the yard.  I found that the reflective material seems to last about the best, but I never got more than about 3 years out of a tarp, but I am in North Central Florida and the sun beats em up pretty quick.  Make sure you anchor it well and plan on replacing the bungee balls pretty frequently or it will turn into a giant sail one evening when you really didnt want to go wrestle with it in the rain or wind.  I used to replace the tarp and just place the new one over the weathered one and that seemed to delay the tearing and wear at the rub spots on the frame a little.  Good luck!!BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:The neighbor had one and one very windy day the covering turned up in my yard. The bent poles were still in her yard though.I have one similar to the shelterlogic and clearspan ... a 10 year old coverall ... but they appear to no longer be in business. I feel it was a much better long term investment than the less expensive versions. In Minnesota there will occasionally be winds, but there will always be snow!!
Reply:I can still find the shelterlogic on line but not the clearspan.  I am guessing shelterlogic is still around but clearspan maybe not.GarySouderton, Pa.

Reply:We looked at a bunch of the "tent" style shelters and finally decided that it just wasn't worth the money.  The sub $1000 ones all looked as though they wouldn't last.  When I found a pole barn kit at diypolebarns.com for under $5000 for a 24x24 metal building I gave up and placed an order.  Their kits are really cheap and include everything you need (even the cement for the poles) and dealing with the owner was a real pleasure.A genuine structure isn't as much money as you might think, remember that there are going to be plenty of things that you will not want to trust to the "tent" due to the potential for water damage.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year

Reply:The Costco "car port" doesn't sell on the net - only from stores. If you're not a member and just want to check it out, tell them you're "going to the pharmacy"; in Ca. anyway they let you in - some law or other. I just went (actually did want the pharmacy) first time in 5-6 years and found they had a bouncer at the door making sure only members enter those exclusive premises! Guess that means Costco's flush; otherwise they'd be more welcoming to _prospective_ customers.Rufus
