While shopping at HF, saw they have electric meat grinderhttp://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=99598Any one has experience with this product?
Reply:I was going to tell you to look into an attachment for a kitchenaid stand mixer, but those are plastic, and about the same price.  The metal kitchenaid attachments are around 150$.I'd think the HF one is worth a shot.  I read the manual and I'd imagine the motor is somewhat undersized from the wattage and the warning to not operate for more than 20 minutes. It would be interesting to see if the grinder part would also fit a standard mixer hub.  If it fits, and it's not a total piece of junk, it would be worth the 60$ to buy the machine just for the attachment.  Kitchenaid mixers can be bought second hand pretty cheap, just stay away from the ones with the tilt head ("artisan"), they have plastic gears that strip.  The bowl lift ("professional") ones have metal gears and hold up pretty good.I just checked my attachments, it's a 3/8 square drive with rounded corners.  The locking mechanism is a hole that receives a screw at the 3 o'clock position, same as the pictures for the HF model.Last edited by clearchris; 03-14-2010 at 04:01 PM.Reason: Added more information
Reply:250 watts is 250/745 = 0.33 hp. Motor at best.
Reply:Yep, the motor is somewhat puny.  My 6qt kitchenaid is between 500 and 700 watts, and it strains when kneading some dry dough.I should have asked...  How many pounds are you looking to grind and how often?BTW, it shows you how overpriced these attachments are when you can get a meat grinder for a 60qt hobart mixer (3/4" hub, 3 phase YEAH!) for under 100$ on ebay, and the small kitchenaid ones are more expensive.
Reply:This should give you some choices. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too..._340586_340586http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...6074_200046074http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...ct_22776_22776http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...ct_36989_36989http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...7458_200387458http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...2328_200422328http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...7457_200387457
Reply:[QUOTE=clearchris;373504] How many pounds are you looking to grind and how often?QUOTE]No more than 10 lbs and probably no more than once every couple months. That is why I don't want to put too much money in it.
Reply:so grab a manual grinder and fab up a motor to the crank shaft?....Mo powa....
Reply:For that volume, I'd go with the HF model, or if you are worried about the motor, the manual one that has the pulley wheel built in and scrounge a washing machine motor.http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...ct_47552_47552Looks like those are available on ebay even cheaper.
Reply:I've got the 99$ jobbie from Northern tool...works very well..no complaints...good quality and nice accessories...no idea about the HF one...Lincoln Weldpak 100Miller Maxstar 150Cutmaster 82Victor OA torch set...somewhere around here...
