I couldn't resist buying HF's orange 4.5" angle grinder on sale for $18. I read here in this forum that at least one person said to replace the gear grease with good quality grease and it should last a long time. So I opened my new one up and found a big clump of grease on one side of the housing. The gears were almost dry, as you can see by the photos below. Reply:Be careful not to over fill it with the new grease or it will run hot, slow, and possibly leak. Don't ask how I know, but I proved it.....twice.

Reply:I have used their grinders for years. I use them until they burn up, and get a new one. My problem with them has always been with the brushes.

Reply:For the money they are just about disposable, however I bought a black and decker at Big Lots for $25 that has outlasted 3 makitas and a craftsman. I use it mainly for cutting and very little for grinding and this thing is just impressive. I have had a couple of the HF orange ones pictured. Mainly got them while on vacation 2 different times and just left them behind with family. It amazes me how some people don't have basic tools and try to do everything with a dremel.....

Reply:I usually have five angle grinders setup...different wheels on each, and have used up many HF and Dewalt grinders. The orange HF's are good deals, run "looser and noisier", but I have never looked at changing the grease. I usually smoke'em and toss them after the first brush change.( I give them to my local thrift store, and they salvage the copper from them). I've found continuous use, like metal prep is when they'll get hot and clock out...also when cutting much steel without a break (like slicing oxygen cylinders). The HF Blue Ones are junk, and not worth buying. For 410.00 or so you can buy a "no questions asked" hand-to-hand swap if you burn up the unit, so its not a bad deal if you use them much , and keep the receipt."Good Enough Never Is"MIller AC/DC ThunderboltHobart HH180, 125EZRiland Cut 40 Plasma oxy/act outfitTons of "stuff", all treasures to me!
Reply:I bought several HF grinders and hooked them up to the cheap accessoriesI have one made into a tiny chop saw, one made into a 1" belt sander, one always has a thin metal cutoff wheel and another with the metal grinding wheel. The chop-saw and sander accessories each cost about as much as the cheap grinders and so far have been handy (for the price.)

o you have any pics of the accessories?
Reply:This is the best 4 1/2" that HF sells. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=65519I haven't seen it in the stores but I bought a couple on sale off the internet a couple of years ago and have yet to open the second box. This is the one i use for grinding and I beat the snot out of it. I relagated all the slide switch ones I have to dedicated uses like cutoff wheel, concrete diamond blade, etc.Cut an MGB and widened 11" C4 Corvette suspension and LT1 Chevrolet power & 6 spd. Reply:For $15 bucks...cant get any better than that. I still have 2 of them that I have been using for 2+ years. I also got a 3yr old 14" chop saw...although I've managed to melt the switch on it after running it for an hour non-stop - still runs. Go orange!
Reply:Well, that grinder lasted about a year before the plastic handle broke off. Fortunately, my Skil grinder handle fits in the HF threads, so I'll run it like that UNTIL I FIND THE SPANNER FOR MY SKIL GRINDER. BTW, I also finally bought a Milwaukee for $100 so I'll always have at least ONE working grinder. And if I lose the spanner for it then I can also use a standard open-end wrench to change the accessory. SteveLast edited by rookie_steve; 06-23-2010 at 08:43 AM.JunkYard Tools .com
