hi im new to the forum and have a question about wiring my HF tig welder.  i just purchased the 98233 tig from harbor freight and i have a question about wiring the plug.  right now my dryer uses this plug type.  so i bought the matching plug but i was reading how welders dont need/use the neutral (white wire).  so when i connect the wires from the welder (black,green, white) am i not supposed to connect the white wire.  i searched but wasnt able to find what im looking for.thanks Attached Images
Reply:I believe the white wire on this machine should be Hot (110v), you have 2 hots and a ground. The ground is always green so the other 2 wether they be white,black or red are the 2 hots that make up the 220v for the machine to operate. Reply:thanks for the reply.  on the wires themself on the welder it says the white is neutral, green is ground, and black is hot.  so should i just connect the wires just as a normaly would, just making sure i connect the black (hot) and the green (ground) in the correct places and connect the white tot he 3rd post?thanks
Reply:Much of the world has a single 220 volt wire and a neutral wire that the 220V is referenced to, while the US gets 220V from two wires, each 110V above ground, that are of opposite phase.I wonder if the manual is describing the first situation.Last edited by California; 06-25-2010 at 12:50 PM.
Reply:from what ive gathered from the web it looks like the neutral wire is used if the welder would require 120v for whatever reason.  but since according to the manual it only states 230v and nothign about 120v i guess i can just put a wire nut on the white neutral wire?  now if i did connect the neutral wire even though its not needed, would that cause any damage?
Reply:Its a 220v machine so if you only hook up one of the two HOT wires you will get nothing because its only receiving 110V, you will need to hook up all 3 wires(ground,Hot,Hot). The green wire will hook up to your green ground on the plug which is the L shaped one that is labeled "W" in your pic, the other two which should be colors black and white hook up to the only two left  which are slanted and labeled "Y" and "X" in your pic, you can either wire the black into the "Y" and white into the "X" or wire the white to the "Y" and black into the "X", it doesnt matter because there both 110V live wires.110V+110V=220V**************DISCLAIMER!!!!!************If you are not familiar with wiring maybe you should have an electrician look at it for ya, that way you dont become a statistic. Reply:thanks for the info guys.  i got it all hooked up and it works.  my only problem now is i cant find a 9/16 18 tpi fitting for the gas inlet.  anyone have any ideas where i can get this fitting?  would ahrbor freight stock the fitting?  i looked ont heir site but i didnt see anythingthanks
