I was welding an exhoust system a couple weeks back and smoke came rolling from the inner works, upon disassembly I found one of the capacitors was blowing smoke from a small vent in the end. This is an old unit I purchased in 1987 and has been very good and doesent owe me a dime and am not apposed to replacing it but the new smaller rigs do not have the spot/stitch option that I often use on my restoration work, not a deal breaker but an issue non the less. After checking with 2 different Miller repair shops in the twin cities I was told it's not worth fixing and buy a new one and either offered much support or called back to tell me parts are available. I called Miller direct, in 5 min. I had a part # but would have to purchase from a dealer. Called dealer #3 and the capacitor is $120. So my question, there are 8 capacitors hooked in parallel, what would cause one to fail ?.... If I replace one, what's the odds the next one will go bad ?... Or should I just buy a new 140.Thanks, Willywelder
Reply:No, repair the old gal. They have much better drive motors and other parts compared to nee.Do yourself a favor and buy the capacitors new from an electronics supplier such as Mouser or Digikey etc. Much cheaper. Replace the cap is bad if you have the ability to test the others. If not, replace them all.Miller Dynasty 200DXMiller Spectrum 250DMiller Millermatic 200Bunch of old blue dinosaurs....
Reply:I have tried to source from mouser and another but they do not carry the capacitor in the same range.Willywelder

Reply:A capacitor usually is only within 10-20 percent of the marked value.Post up the voltage, capacitance and size of the capacitors and someone can hunt down a usable substitute.

Reply:My experience is that too high voltage capacitors will drift to the applied voltage and the capacitance will drift to a higher value.
Reply:It's a Millermatic Auto-Arc 130, s/n JF869035.Willywelder

idn't think of the Auto Arc 130. Was looking at the little MM130's that run a single output cap. TEDSS.com is my usual go to for replacement caps and I typically step up the voltage rating to get them out of the surge range. These are the ones I'd consider and would definitely replace all.http://www.tedss.com/2020004756http://www.tedss.com/2020002694http://www.tedss.com/2020064123MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:change the 35 to 45 volts, might be easier to find. but check how tall they are. these caps are all different sizes now.
