Made another round down to Texas over the weekend, and decided in the interest of history I'd try to capture the sound of the old 6-71 doing some work. The new rear tires being radials (old skins were bias ply nylon), and smaller overall diameter, made a huge difference on the hills.  Twas almost like a new truck Not many of these old mills left on the road these days, and what there is are mostly restored show trucks that don't earn their keep anymore.  Guys pulling empty trailers to truck shows mostly.  I do see some of the 318's still in oilfield pulling rigs though.I did manage to pass two cars on this trip   (they were broken down on the side of the road )  The full run time of the video is the time it takes to get to a whopping 58mph on level groundLast edited by farmersamm; 11-19-2012 at 09:47 AM."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:i always liked the sound of those old detriots.  when i was in high school, haliburton trucks used to go past one of my friend's house all the time.  had a nice, long steady pull right down the road.  those thing sounded good pulling that hill.
Reply:I ran a Euclid( for you young fellas, that's Terex now) C-6 cat yrs ago and it was powered w/ the turbo'd 6-71. I always said if that engine did as much work as it sounded like it was doing it could push 2 D-8's backward, LOL!!                                           MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:I always loved the sound of a two stroke jimmy.    but only for as long as it took to pass.      Having to sit in that penalty box all day and listen to that jimmy sing would drive a man do drink (more than normal) Glad to see you got her rolling though.     You might need to pirate the tall rubber off the cabover for some more legs.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:We got to work on the 3 71 in diesel school man that thing sounded so bad azz with no exhaust in a closed shop. I always wanted something that had a 2 stoke diesel in it getting more and more rare now.Vantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.
Reply:We had a 69 GMC with a 671   RTO15 deep reduction it would run 45 on the flats. I pulled 120.000 with it on wet ground. Nothing like a Detroit i will never forget the cold morning and haveing to drive with the windows down and my door open till it warmed up and stoped some of its smoking. I have ran every thing you can think of with a Detroit. The place i work for had a Terx dozer with 2 671 that you split in 2 parts to move.I worked on alot of them and started buying black jeans. I can remember when the 318 was a big engine for a truck. If trukers today had to drive them they would be lost.
Reply:Sounds good!!!! When I worked in the strip mines we had pans that had 2 detriots in it!! You could hear them from a mile away!!
Reply:[QUOTE=Old Doug;1838461 The place i work for had a Terx dozer with 2 671 that you split in 2 parts to move..[/QUOTE]  Yep, was called a TC-12. It was two C-6's bolted together w/ one track on each. Cat had the Quadtrack, two D-9's nose to tail w/ one operator in the rear one. They were made mainly to push scrapers. Had a ball hitch between them and the ball was about 2 ft in diameter. Well, enough hijackin'!!                                           MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:Used to run a funny CAT farm dozer that some scholar had put a 6-71 in.  Plugs and muffs required for more than a minute or two, much less 10-12 hrsExperience is something you get right after you need it
Reply:Farmersamm, thanks for posting the video of your 6-71 pulling through the gears. Like a lot of guys I learned on old Detroits and 237 Macks. I got out about the time 'drive by wire' appeared. The  sound of a 238 and 9510 has got to make you smile.

Reply:Worked around construction when the screamers were in their hay day, drove the GMC lowboy tractors, worked around a TC12.... no wonder I can hardley hear now. Being on the crusher with one screaming a few feet away and a dragline with a screamer in it  feeding the crusher was a real pleasure.
Reply:Thanks for sharing Samm..
