Scrubbed some tires on the trip to Texas, real bad  One is a total loss.So it was time to see how the things had worn.  They were feathered, indicating the toe in was wrong (why should I be surprised)Jacked her upGot out my Hunter Alignment special tool for marking tiresHold this still on the ground while someone rotates the tire (Kelly), and the nail scribes a nice line down the middle of the treadTake a tape measure, and measure front and back on the tire line.  In this case the back measurement was 90 1/2", and the front measurement was 89 1/4" .  WOW!!!!!!!!!Turn the tie rod to adjust the thingFinal set was 1/8" toe in.  Ready for some happy motoring"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Two questions:I thought toe-in was measured from rim-to- rim.  Doesn't the additional circumfrence of the tire change the toe-in value? That alignment marking tool looks like it was made from pressure treated Southern Yellow Pine and a 16 penny galvanized wire nail.  Would a standard KD S-P-F 2x4 and a bright 12 penny nail work as well?- MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.

Reply:Another little trick that will make you're scribe mark easier to see, (especially on more aggressive tread of tire), is before you scribe your line, paint a bright colored stripe around the tire, holding a spraypaint can in front of the tire in the middle while someone turns the tire.  Let it dry a few minutes, then scribe your line inside the paint mark. And you are right on the mark about the Dayton wheels.  Both of my lowboys and my float have Daytons, as do my Mack.  The Pete has budd wheels.  My 3 axle lowboy and the float are fairly easy to get the runout decent.  the Mack isn't too bad either.  But the tandem lowboy for some reason is hell to get the wobble out of the duals.  Both lowboys have 10:00-15's, but the tandem is horrible to get straight.  Of course it's the one I use the most, and have the most flats on...

Reply:Two old broom handles, clamped together with a couple of hose clamps, just slide them in or out between the rims front  and back, at 3 and 9 oclock is how we always did it when we had to check or adjust toe in w/o an alignment rack."The reason we are here is that we are not all there"SA 200Idealarc TM 300 300MM 200MM 25130a SpoolgunPrecision Tig 375Invertec V350 ProSC-32 CS 12 Wire FeederOxweld/Purox O/AArcAirHypertherm Powermax 85LN25
Reply:To eliminate any run-out using this method, scribe tyres, measure distance at the front then rotate both wheels 180* and measure the same spot again at the rear, I used to take quite a few measurements like this setting up big motor rotors centrally in the stator housing,Always turn the rotor 90* at a time and measure from the same placeNice one Samm.Lincoln SP-170 MigHypertherm powermax 45Lorch T220 AC/DC TigButters FM 215 synergic MigKemppi 180 adaptive mig RULES ARE FOR THE OBEDIENCE OF FOOLS AND THE  GUIDANCE OF WISE MEN.
Reply:This IS how I've checked toe on a race car before. Paint a stripe around the tire and scribe a line while someone scribes it. We've got a nice little tool with a spring loaded point on it so we don't have to use a nail (though we've used a screwdriver and a jack stand before LOL).With a bodied car we've got a nice little gauge that slides under the chassis and "flips up" next to the tire. A mirror sometimes helps too. Gordon I don't think run out would play too much of a factor in the measurement. Even it the wheel and/or the tire had some wiggle in it the line scribed is going to be in relation to the spindle pin regardless of where the pieces attached to it wiggle or hop to. If the tire does have a "hump" in it of say .25 inches, over 90 inches that's only a difference across the tires of .00034 inches.
