Hello, I've been an auto mechanic for 37 years. O/A welding and brazing is the method I'm most proficient at. Most of the welding on the job would be Mercrdes-Benz automobile exhaust. There are a number of welding projects that need to be completed at home also. I am considering the purchase of a welder for home and shop use. The GTAW process appears to be the most similar to what I am proficient at. I have been reading the forum here. Welding tips and tricks website is very helpful also. I have never used a MIG machine before. Is today's modern TIG machine out of the question for an old timer like me? Should I simply take the easy way out and purchase a MIG welder? Reply:There are a number of nice 3 in one mig. tig. stick machines out on the market now at reasonable prices for the home hobbyist. Millers Multimatic 200 and some of the newer Thermal arc machines come to mind. Price range is "reasonable" compared to say getting 2 dedicated machines. If you are good at OA, then tig shouldn't be that tough at all. Tig has some areas where it's a better choice than mig and vise versa. It's really hard to give a good answer to which is "better" without more detail in what sorts of projects you have in mind. Tig tends to be more precise and is better for things like SS in many cases. Mig tends to be a better choice for say body work and is easier for many for "general" projects and thicker materials, though most tig machines will let you run stick for thicker work. You might want to look into a night class at a local tech school or community college so you can try both. When you sit down and add up what materials, gas, filler, electric etc would cost you to do the same amount of practice, not to mention the instruction, a class is usually stupid cheap..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
