We have an ex-hellinois DOT,International salt truck. Boss told me to tighten up the slack adjusters. Oh, and, "make sure you jack it up to do it", whatever. (but I still didn't jack it up)Anywho, I turn them righty tighty, and then the chamber rod starts coming out. OK.............. After a while of thinking, I decide to turn them lefty loosey. Voila, lefty tighty, WTF???Has anyone ever heard of a lefty tighty slack adjuster? The only thing I can think of is that they installed the "S" cams on the wrong sides. And if so, I am thinking that the pressure applied to the shoe, will be wrong. Meaning, the leading edge of the shoe is usually thicker, because that is where the most pressure is.I'm stumped. I consider myself very knowledgeable about the subject, when it's done correctly. I never put them on backwards, so I am lacking in the expertise of doing it wrong."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:The ones on the European Mack Midliners are backwards if I remember correctly. An old Cornbinder should have regular old slacks on it.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Old manual slacks? Someone transposed them, they will work the same. As for auto slacks, they get ornery when installed backwards.Miller Big 40GMiller HF-251 D High FreqVictor OA Lincoln 135 MigMK 3A CobramaticBridgeport J HeadCronatron OxylanceRadnor ACAG TorchWeldcraft TIG Torches1 blown knee and two 5 Gallon pails away from being a hero.
Reply:Two things you said means a lot EX DOT and International If you want to check remove the backing plate, block the wheels, release the brakes, have someone push down on the peddle and see if the cams are rotating in the right direction. If they are and the brakes work, then put the plate back on your job is done.www.georgesplasmacuttershop.comPlasma Cutter and Welder Sales and Repairs--Ebay storeTec.Mo. Reply:Sometimes slack adjusters are reversed to provide clearance for the wrench. My LN9000 has brake pod mounting brackets that interfere with access to the adjusters.  The configuration places the adjuster nut too close to the spring packs so the adjuster had to be mounted reversed, and it has to be turned out to tighten it.  Always be aware that adjusters don't always tighten to the right."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:You can't tell me anything about salt and rust. I retired from a mechanic/welder job from a DOT yard. We also took care of a airport for snow removal. Most of the trucks didn't have backing plates they rusted and fell off or were left off once you got them off.Last edited by mechanic416; 02-01-2013 at 09:03 AM.Reason: spellingwww.georgesplasmacuttershop.comPlasma Cutter and Welder Sales and Repairs--Ebay storeTec.Mo.
