hey guys happy to have found this site. The work I have seen on here is amazing. You are all truly skilled and masters at your craft. Little back ground info on me. I have my own seasonal business. I am 37 years old. I am extremely motivated and hard working. I am very excited about learning to weld. My brothers buddy is a pipe welder who is two years old than me who practiced for a couple months and is now pipe welding in NJ making a lot of money and loves the job. I understand that most do not get into the field or learn as quick as he did. He is the exception to the rule I assume. I am looking for a school that is affordable that I could go to if anyone knows of any in NJ. I need to stay local due to having to work once march comes until december. Need to pay bills or Id go some where full time where ever it is. Any advice for me would be greatly appreciated. Also if any of you are local to Monmouth or Ocean County NJ and would be interested in mentoring me please let me know. I know that it is rare but maybe theres someone retired out there who would be interested. I will pay whatever I can as well if compensation is required. Also looking for recommendations on what to practice at my house. I currently only have 110 volt power. Looking to get 220 plug but electricians said i need to upgrade whole house to 200 amp service which is very costly. I do have a 7500 generator with a 220 plug but not sure if that is okay to use. which welder should I buy in your opinion. Have had a few offers to buy my lincoln tig 200 for around $1200 so i could use that plus cash towards another one. Any drills I should do and any text books do you guys recommend out there that are the same as the ones taught in the welding schools. Thank you

First try to get an internship or something similar, maybe as a welders helper or possible an apprenticeship, check for welding schools that have evening or night classes, or junior college courses as a start. Reply:Boy oh boy. Your desire exceeds but you have to control that. NO ONE just becomes anything willy nilly. Slow down, take a class to cool your jets. After that, think some more. Just because you want something doesn't mean anything until you can wrap your head around what, right now, you are incapable of. Take a breath and plan. Right now, you are ahead of yourself. As far as your genset goes, it needs to be 'clean power' (Google) to run a modern digital set and 7.5KW might be slim. BUT! there is nothing like an energized young human... Best to you.
Reply:UniqueTouch,I'm just a hobby guy - up in Somerset/Union county - learned to weld by taking a hobby class offered at a Denville Voc school - was a 1X per week class that ran a couple months or so - about 3 hrs per night. It was basically open shop time in the welding shop - 1 instructor there to show basics - then anyone who signed up was left to practice on coupons or work on their own projects. Access to stick, mig, tig units and a plasma cutter table. I liked it b/c of it's informality and could get feedback/advice from the instructor at anytime. I'd suggest looking for a local voc school near you that offers a similiar "intro to hobby welding" type class - seems like it would work with your schedule too as it is in the evenings. Then - get your home setup working so alternate nights you can continue practicing - btw - you could generally slide many, many "practice coupons" out of the voc school class for home practice! This one ran spring and fall - and filled up well in advance though.Good luck
Reply:Welcome to the forum! My grand son is 15 and has decided he wants to be a welder. His Mom wants him to go to college. My wife and I are very supportive for him to pursue welding, and I hope he does. In this area, there are community colleges that offer night courses in welding. If I were in your shoes, I would try to enroll in something like that, and also try to find a job in a welding shop. Good luck!
Reply:if ya watch craigslist and offerup ya might find a good deal on an engine drive welder, out here on the other side of the country recently there have been several of the older Miller Trailblazers showing up in the $1100 to $2500 price range which ran perfectly just not needed.. I snagged a super clean one for $500 watching estate sales!

I really do appreciate it. Monsoon-mech, I have noticed similar great deals like that near me as well. What would you say would be the maximum hours that you would want to go up to on a used machine like that?

Reply:Agree with others about voc school, patience and finding a job as welder's helper. Just a note regarding 220 power at your home. If you find the right electrician,they can add a 220 plug without whole system upgrade "BUT"while the welder is in use,electric use in remainder of house must be limited (elect water heater breaker turned off,no cooking on electric range,no elect coffee pot,no microwave or other power hogs) lighting only.
