I started this up in the general welding questions forum but didn't get any direct feedback on the 98233. So I apologize if this is sort of a double post. I'm looking for my first stick welder (I have a HF 151 so far but need more oomph for farm projects). I have 220V and would like DC rather than just an AC buzzbox. A Lincoln AC/DC 225 or a Stickmate would be great but I'm just not seeing them on CL at reasonable prices or else too far to drive to make it a bargain. As an alternative, how's the HF model as a DC stick welder? It's rated at 165 amps which should be enough to run 1/8" rods I would expect. It has a TIG torch so I could at least play around wtih TIG if I got a bottle and reg. And it's currently on sale for $399 and I could buy an extended warranty.Reading the posts on this unit people seem to like it as a TIG except for the weird gas coupling and lack of a foot pedal (although it seems one can be added later with a bit of work). I don't expect to really get heavy into TIG any time soon (I'm not doing roll cages, motorcycle frames, or aluminum), but it would be nice to lay down a smooth bead on mild steel with no smoke etc. And for farm implements I can use some 6010 and not worry about the bead or getting electrocuted. What say you, oh Wizards of Welding, you Masters of Metal?
Reply:Seriously? 96 views and not one comment?? C'mon, somebody must own this puppy.
Reply:I have owned one for about 1.5 years. I have been very pleased with it so far, but have only used it as a stick welder. I have yet to use the tig setup . I think it is worth the money. It is the first inverter I have ever owned, so I don't have anything else to compare it to.
Reply:thanks!
Reply:I have watched a couple of u-tube videos where it is being used with the tig setup on mild steel, it seems to do an great job. If you buy one, & set up the tig, please post back as to your experience with it. I really want to try tig welding. I have had experience brazing, so I'm hoping when the time comes that will help me on the tig . Now you've got me wanting to get it setup & give it a try!
