Hypertherm Max42

bought a max 42 last weekend and have a few questions maybe someone can help me out with. 1st is the pilot are is broken the previous owner looked into it some and believes it was the pilot arc board. any thoughts?2nd is consumables someone on another forum believes the torch has been replaced(might be an RT60)  also the previous owner mentioned he had a hard time finding the right consumables. The sticker on the torch handle says its PAC1217. Was wondering if the consumables at this link would work since as far as i can tell by looks they are the same.http://www.river-weld.com/hypertherm...s01_p6432.html
Reply:The torch you have is called a PAC-121T, not a 1217. It is of the same era as the MAX42 so it may be the original torch. The RT-60 is the torch Hypertherm recommends as a replacement, and should be easier to find consumables for.The consumables in your link look like the right ones for that torch, but I'm not sure, the MAX42 I have here has the RT-60 replacement torch. Also, are you sure the pilot arc problem you are having is the board and not a problem with the torch or something else? Does it work at all?Jim Colt from Hypertherm is a regular on this board, hopefully he can give you some assistance as well.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:you are correct it is PAC-121T. Its just that the "T" looked like a 7 at first glance. The plasma cutter does work. i fired it up last weekend and did a little bit of cutting. It just takes a few tries to get an arc going with out the pilot arc. I'm not quite sure what the problem is since i bought it broke. That is why I figured i'd look into it a bit and see if someone knew anything about it. Figured i couldnt go wrong for $200
Reply:The PAC121T is the stock torch for the MAX42The first thing to do is make sure the consumables are the right onescap   020930nozzle  020350electrode  020573swirl ring  020361before thinking the board was bad. I have seen the wrong parts in a lot of torchs that the  customer has brought in there plasma cutter not working.www.georgesplasmacuttershop.comPlasma Cutter and Welder Sales and Repairs--Ebay storeTec.Mo. Dealer Consumables for the PT and IPT torch's
Reply:the swirl ring is the correct part. As far as the other parts I can't tell since I could find part numbers. I'll find out whenever I get some new consumables if thats the problem. Anyone know of any other dealers for consumables?
Reply:Even though the Max42 is probably over 20 years old....you can call Hypertherm tech service and they can help you troubleshoot the unit...it is free, and they are usually very helpful even on older systems like this.Consumables....No one should ever have issues finding consumables for any Hypertherm torch that was ever produced. They are in stock at Hypertherm....go to an authorized distributor (a list is on www.hypertherm.com  click on "where to buy") and they can order them for you. If you need part numbers for Hypertherm consumables....again the website lists all consumables for all systems...even if it has been out of production for 20 years. Here is a more direct link to the consumables page for hand torches.   http://www.hypertherm.com/en/Product...parts_list.jspAs Mechanic 416 says....the issue may just be the wrong combination of consumables in the torch.Jim Colt    Hypertherm Originally Posted by Andymanbought a max 42 last weekend and have a few questions maybe someone can help me out with. 1st is the pilot are is broken the previous owner looked into it some and believes it was the pilot arc board. any thoughts?2nd is consumables someone on another forum believes the torch has been replaced(might be an RT60)  also the previous owner mentioned he had a hard time finding the right consumables. Reply:Make sure your consumables are marked with HT and a part number and NOT ITW.These look the same but are different sizes. Also do not over tighten the cap. Turn on until it stops then back it off a little.Make sure you air pressure is set right. To high or to low are both not good.
Reply:Finally get some hypertherm consumables and tested it out. New/right consumables didn't help any at all. still no pilot arc. so would this mean it is the pilot arc board?
Reply:Best bet...call Hypertherm tech service. They are free and very helpful. There are a lot of things that could cause the arc not to fire...a broken wire in the torch leads...a sticking torch plunger, incorrect air pressure/flow, etc. It is a lot more effective to have the experts help you...than to just guess at replacement parts!   www.hypertherm.com   click on "contact us"  then you will find the email and phone numbers for tech service.Jim Colt  Hypertherm
Reply:What is your air pressure setting. It is always set with the air flowing. Make sure the cap is not to tight. If the cap is to tight or the air pressure is to high. The torch has a hard time firing a pilot arc. When you were able to cut the torch did make a pilot arc. To high of air pressure it will blow the pilot arc out. With the torch on the metal when the trigger is pulled, the short pilot might be just long enough to get the cut arc going. If the cap is on tight, the electrode might have a hard time moving and starting an arc.Make sure you has at least 80 psi supplied to the unit. Set the plasma regulator to 70 psi with the air flowing.
