What are the issues in using some scrap red iron left over from my building for making w welding table? I know it has the coating on it that will need to be removed for welds but other than that what are the problems? Thanks from a new guy
Reply:Most time they cut the the size/strength by 10%. But depending on the building department. Some types you can not use used iron.Dave

Reply:When the OP says red iron im thinking I beams, channel or angles and that would be fine for legs, now for the table top get the thickest plate you can afford. We've done so much, for so long, with so little. Were now qualified to do anything with nothing !
Reply:He's never come back to explain if the "red iron" is left over sheeting from a loose housing shed or if it's I beams from a 20 story condo.... might make a difference...The harder you fall, the higher you bounce...250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes
Reply:Correct. C Channel just using it for frame then, as stated,  getting the thickest I can afford but not less than 1/4”. I am hoping for 3/8” but we will see what the wallet can standLast edited by Nmhuntr; 1 Week Ago at 09:18 PM.Reason: Grammer
Reply:But, what size is the C channel?  Have you checked out the sticky on welding tables for ideas? There's lots of nice ones in there... https://weldingweb.com/vbb/threads/3...picture-threadThe harder you fall, the higher you bounce...250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes
Reply:I use scrap iron so depens on what find on what I use. I like channel for table top. Plate is nice but hard to find and typically will cost money 💵.  TIG welders like ground plate that will cost a lot. I say away from tig type work it low money,  to many in work and cost a lot for tooling. Do not get me wrong tig welding is the almost most fun of all welding but everyone wants to do the work.Dave

Reply:I use a 1/4 top. All scrap I tacked up as needed and really should have started oer at some point.  There are features I find important but none of them fancy.  I don't much care what the legs are, would just as soon have angle.www.urkafarms.com
