So I've heard about people using a car battery and jumper cables to weld. Does this actually work?

Reply:I have read since 1960's I told back then it does not work well. A battery is CV and stick welding needs CC . Never try it but if I was up in the high country and need weld done to get home  I would give it shot .There is more to this why it does not work but get real wordy.Dave

Reply:It works.  Many off-road trail enthusiasts use it for simple repairs.
Reply:It would ok if you add Reactor.Have try a car battery welding?Dave

Reply:I think Macgyver did this, something like the a spark plug was damaged and he welded back up...   But I heard Macgyver could fix anything with nothing. We've done so much, for so long, with so little. Were now qualified to do anything with nothing !
Reply:Yes the prop man did wonders I like most things Macgyver did some could be done but the rest is all on the prop man.Dave

Reply:The egg white works.I remember that too and look that one up.Dave

A bank of batteries won't have the ability to maintain amperage the way a stick welder does, & it surely won't maintain voltage as a MIG welder does. Could it weld? A: Yes. Will it work well? A: No.And NO, a single car battery hasn't nearly the storage needed to weld properly. Only a group of batteries could work. Typically at least 4 car batteries arranged in either series, or series parallel. I think of 48 volts as a good weld voltage. Four 12 volt nominal batteries in series, or better two parallel banks of four in series parallel. In answer: Could it be done? A: Yes.Would a Chinese welder be cheaper & work better? Yes.

Reply:I was in a "Jeep Club" for a few years.  Usually, if something needed real welding on the trail, we found a way to limp it/tow it back to hard pack and get it home to someone's garage for proper work.  I do recall one trip where someone had something break (I don't recall the specifics, but it wasn't anything major I don't believe).  We had a guy who used some sort of battery had and some wire (They said a coat hanger, but who knows what it was).  It was all the rage on the trail that day and on the forum for a while....  "He welded that thing on the trail and it held".  I think it's safer to say the part wasn't really broken, and he just melted some lesser metal of some sort onto another piece of metal and the part underneath never broke any further.  LOL.

Reply:Well 5he physics of it may work only if you stayed in a holiday inn the night before so my thoughts are no it would probably short a diode in the alternator, explode the battery, make mess.  But somebody video it let us seeRetired Old GuyHobart 210Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 Tombstone Evolution 14” Saw

Reply:the world war 2 generation could do it particularly the support crews in the aircraft plants and factories that did whatever it took to supply the troops in the field. i'm pretty sure if you set some strong batteries up wire for 24-volt a decent stick weldor could stick some metal parts together "emergency repair quality" it's all about the puddle.
Reply:About 30 or 40 years ago I saw that add.I hate to think weld from alternator/welder.But I guess in high country and wanting to go home it would do job till get home to real welder. Dave

Reply:I've done it. Three in series for 36 volts is kind of the minimum to make it work. Not my first choice of equipment setup.
Reply:It would be a fun humorous experiment. I would want to use it to actually weld though. I have seen people go through a lot of hassle doing something in some crazy redneck way when it would have been easier and often cheaper to do it the right way from the start.Gear: Esab power compact 205 with tbi industries torch         BOC Smootharc 185dc tig         Miller Syncrowave 350LX
Reply:Those  ww2 generator welders used to be pretty common. Dad had one. I have it now and have thought of finding a motor for it. I used one that a farmer I worked for had.Neat thing was you could use the generator to start the has motor.

Reply:A battery power welder can made. But first you need a real big battery and a reactor/resistor. A set jumper cables and car battery may get homeIf your battery does not explode and you do not have flaming cables and who take a hood to back country so now you are blind too driving home on mountain roads.
