I'm getting ready to add some wear bar to my bucket in preparation for this season. Any suggestions on placement, spacing, etc? I plan to use 5/32" 7018 on DC+.

Reply:Do you not already have wear bars? I don't see a lot of wear on bucket bottom, I see it on the edges. Are the pieces you've added AR steel?Logic says you want to protect the joint between bucket bottom & sides. The floor has protection in place. An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Reply:What you primarily dig has a lot to do with placement. Plus you need to answer @Willie B questions too.Lincoln 330MPXModified Lincoln 225 TombstoneLincoln LN-25X-TVTMagnum PRO 250LX GT Spool Gun¼ Ton of Torches OFC-A / OFG-ASMAW FCAW GMAW Air Carbon Arc GougingEverlast 62i Plasma CutterIngersoll Rand Type 30 14HP#Freebird Welds

Reply:Willie, yes it has wear plates but Geith did not put much thought into the design of this one (at least not for digging in the green mountains). The plates are large and thin, with a big gap between them, right at the most vulnerable part of the bottom of the bucket. The plates have worn through at this point. The corners of the bucket have worn some, but not disproportionately. I should have taken a picture without the new pieces there. Yes it is some sort of AR. I'd have to call Irv to find out exactly what he sold me. But it's definitely meant for this purpose.Freebird, the digging around here is rocks. Some with clay interspersed, some with sand interspersed.

Dave, the bucket has not been repaired before. My plan was to add these 3/8" bars close enough together that they will prevent direct abrasion to the original bucket floor. I played around with them a little more after my original post and this is my current plan:

Reply:I don't know if you are planning to add any hard surface to the AR (or if it would be much harder than the plates you are adding) but I got looking under the CAT loader after a discussion on wear plates for small snow blowers. The discussion was whether the hard surface beads should run parallel or perpendicular to travel. Under my loader it was actually done in a diamond pattern to minimize drag either way.The harder you fall, the higher you bounce...250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes
