Reply:Yes. Some will argue that the WH must be hard wired but I disagree, in fact we have a whole subdivision here where the WHs are plug and cord into a 3 wire dryer receptacle. Reply:I would say I fundamentally agree that in principle there is nothing wrong with it except that,,,, its never in the instructions to wire them that way due to the fact says cords not to replace permanent wiring.  Some will argue that the WH must be hard wired

Reply:As long as it is a tank type with less than 7000 watts it will work.A whole house instantaneous water heater will pull at least 50 amps so it would not work on a dryer outlet.Why do you need to heat hot water?

Reply:Mine has a 30 amp 240 plug three wire  on it. It needs to sized to your WH. Don’t get a three prong RV 120 volt plug it needs to be a 240 plug.

Reply:The instructions don't say you can and they don't say you can't, in fact most of the time the instructions say to have a licensed electrician install.
