I dont know anything about big machines.  last time I used a 500A one was on a job 30+ years ago, they were on 6 and 8 packs, running innershield.   I saw a 500 Commander on a trailer a while back.  I would think the place to look for something like that might be Ritchie auction, maybe mining or shipyard?  It was kind of a curiosity thing mostly but I havnt even seen something like that around, I asked a rental yard, only one as I didnt shop around but it was kind of a thought even though I am more a mini Maxstar kind of guy these days.    The mobile welding thread had my interest with that simply that heavy trucks etc is not something out of my reach. American Bridge and Chicago Bridge and Iron had some monster electric but I cant recall seeing big engine drive monsters. Buyinfg a fixer u8pper is not for everyone but I could do that,,,, wasnt Wrench guys cat 600A?  I dont recall if it weas CV though.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:Lincoln SA series were most common & they weren't all that big. I've seen a number of big ones with at least 6 cylinder engines, not sure Lincoln made big ones when the SA series were in production. If you want new, or newish, I'd be tempted by a Miller Trailblazer, or I presume Lincoln offers something similar. Unless you need it for air arcing, you'll do fine with 250 or 300 amps.An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Reply:I have a couple 200's now.  Yes, air arc would be the point as well as huge wire.  Yes, they make SAE, they made them in 400 as I recall.  Its been a while since I saw those.  They probably output way above 400 too.  I have ran 7/32 sticks on SA200, really makes them groan.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:I had a 300 but was so crusty I scrapped it.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:The old SAE-400's maxed out around 600A if I recall....the dial went past 400 to "MAX."  Pretty sure I've heard of them load-banking in the 575A area or so.  I know there was at least an SAF-600 (one was on ebay for years), and pretty sure they went bigger back in the day, I used to have the literature.  The 400 I used to have, had an International inline 6 OHV engine powering it.  Around 230 cubic inches if I remember.  They also had the Continental F244's and F245's which were flathead straight 6's.  I had a SAM-400 as well which had the same engine choices. When I was running my International a lot, I thought about taking an SAE-400 generator and driving it off of the truck's PTO.  I like the arc of the 400's and the dual continuous controls, I just don't particularly like the engines.  I was hoping to find either a belt-driven SAE-400 (they made them) or a motor-generator one that I could drive...wasn't interested in trying to adapt an engine-drive.
Reply:I seen 490 + amps on single phase power with my Thermal-arc MST-400. Weighed about 55 pounds.. That was 15 year old tech though..

I really prefer my LM-200 though.. Has better arc starts with smaller wire, and peaks about 330 amps.(good voltage) same weight and case as the 400..

Reply:Yes, I thought the wrench guys machine was dual.   tbome,,, what was the SAM?  I almost cant believe hearing myself say it was 35 yrs ago since "I",, ha.  I vaguely remember seeing that. I hear the feeder numbers and cant recall ce3pt for they were gray,,, ha,, LN25 maybe?  Same for the wire size. Last time I use one was on a big hi rise.   There is a lot of digging and heavy foundation starting.  It doesnt interest me all that much but I could be persuaded but if I was gonnja do it am not gonna peck with something dinky, goona shate fire with 1/2 inch carbon,,, hawww.urkafarms.com
Reply:It wouldnt be much of a stretch to put my body on a newer truck and simply put big machine in the back or even trailer mount the unit itself.  Scott, you think that electronic thing would tolerate that current on air arc?www.urkafarms.com

Reply:Years ago in the oilfield a guy had a Lincoln running off a pto on his truck's V8.  It worked very well, with the added advantage that the truck was always warm in the winter.

Reply:There are a lot of 400’s on the internet they are so big had a SAM 400 easier to put on trailer then a truck
Reply:I missed a pic I wish I would have taken. Simple 14 or 16 ft car tailer with ironworker gang box on it, 500 machine with a cover over it and a torch bottle rack they bolted/welded on.  Was slick as hell and could have a labor deliver it to a job.  Could go so far as to toss a compressor on it.  It was a smooth install, could tell some guy done this before and knew the easiest way to do it.Last edited by Sberry; 1 Week Ago at 07:40 PM.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:Just a little paint and a new label ready to go.I hope that hour meter came with welder too it looks bran new.Dave

Reply:I agree about pto in the winter.  I got 4 engine drives I dont use now.  I can see a niche that not so complicated but not everyone could do.www.urkafarms.com

Reply:There was a threat in the early 2000's that optional AC power on a common pickup was gonna be an option.  Seems about 14K they mention and about 4K in cost as a factory option which would be reasonable considering weight space and would work dandy for todays inverters.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:Wouldnt be all dumb to see if a guy could make north of 300, maybe 4 cheap and light. Especially if not needed constant.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:I was wondering if rental stores had something in the monster class.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:Just what I need a dead battery from using the ac power.Just think of call AAA and saying "my truck battery is dead in my from yard I was using the ac power for 12 hours"Dave

I could welder with ac and would close to price of a generator.  Dave

Reply:I hand an old hobart with  a jeep engine in it that I ran until I seized it up  about 350 amps it would lay the stick on like spreading peanut butter, engine just moaning and bellowing. the main branch of our local welding supply has some vantage 500 or what ever size they are, for rent, big fancy machines.Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Reply:How much does it cost?    Dave,,,  I think the trucks run inverter generator from PTO.  That was right before the 2008 crash and then we didnt hear more about it.  Even then everyone was still feeling like it took 50A input to run a 1/8 lo hy.  The inverter welders just breaking in then.Last edited by Sberry; 6 Days Ago at 10:15 AM.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:In time we will see how inverter welders do over time. The big advantage of the inverter welders is starting the weld.Dave
