Howdy folks,,haven't been on here in a while,,but like everything else,,you never call until you need help, so, I'm calling loudly,,,, I have a fairly new CH Pro Mig 140 that has become so dang erratic I'm about to go ballistic,,!! Sometimes it will start spitting gobs of weld metal and changing the wire feed rate down to almost nothing will "sometimes"  get it to start welding good but is getting so agravating to try to use the machine.  This model (WG3090) has the 5 heat settings and 1-10 wire speed setting. I been doing a lot of reading here on other threads and would like to get some questions answered if possible. I know one of my attempts at trying to get this thing to work for me is prolly not the best fix,,,but a man gotta do what a man gotta do,,right,?? The machine came with a very short, and what I thought too small wire size power cord.,,so I tried what I had available is a piece of 15 foot long of 12-2 W ground  solid wire to give me some working reach. The machine now has .035 wire using 75/25 shielding gas. The most I ever use this machine on is 1/8" steel and use my 220 V arc welder for all other work. I did read on another thread where somebody here suggested to switch to .025 wire instead of the .035 wire,,,,???? Main question here is ,,,#1 Will the liner have to be changed to use the .025 wire? Any other suggestions will be very much appreciated.  Many Thanks.
Reply:Most machines use the same liner for various size wires. I cant think of why yours wouldn't do the same. Keep in mind that most small homeowner mig setups use a smaller whip as they pull large amounts of current, longer runs often mean larger wire size. Most user manuals for those machines dont recommend plugging into extension cords unless they are heavy duty. If your wire speed is changing while welding, check to make sure your rollers arent slipping. Make a cup with your hand like you're trying to drink water out of it, take your mig gun and shoot the wire into the palm of your hand. If the wire bends and/or balls up but keeps feeding then you are good, if the wire hits your hand and stops then chances are your rollers are slipping.Check to make sure your rollers are the correct size for the wire you're running. Sometimes rollers work for two size wires, the wire size you're running should be labeled and facing out. I have a small mig i use for sheet metal and such....i ****ing hate that thing with a passion!Welding --- My paid hobby!
Reply:Do the basics. Replace tip and nozzle. Clean out liner with compressed air. Make sure the tip is the right size for the wire. Keep the tip clean and change out frequently. Make sure the ground is intact and make sure the connections are not loose. Make sure the gas is coming out and you have the correct pressure with no leaks. You do not have to change liner for different sized wires. Make adjustments to wire tensioner if you change out wires. Make sure roller is flipped for your wire size and make sure break is not set too tight.Last edited by jeffrey.penfield; 03-06-2019 at 11:27 AM.
Reply:Your wire selection is not helping. The little 120v machines are not designed for .035 Solid wireFrom the manual :"This welder is setup for .030 in. (0.8 mm) wire. If a different wiresize is used, the wire feed drive roller and contact tip may need changing. There are two grooves in the drive roller. The small groove is for .024 in. (0.6 mm) MIG wire and the large groove is for .030 - .035 in. (0.8 - 0.9 mm) flux core and MIG wire. Rotate the tension knob down and swing arm up and flip the drive rollerto choose the correct groove."Go buy some .024/.025 solid wire and try again. (.024 and .025 are rally the same thing)Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:Hey Guys,,,,I GOT A MACHINE,,,,,again,,!!!  I did like Ed suggested and changed the wire to the .023 with some new .030 tips as the guy at welding supply said they did not make .025 tips,,,???? Anyway,,took the whole torch apart and removed the liner for a thorough clean out. Liner was really pretty dang clean as welder is only bout 8 months and I don't use it that much.  Cut a piece of .035 wire and run it thru liner til it ran free and clear. Reassembled it all and fired that mother up and the friggin thing started to spittin gobs of weld metal,,,,until I noticed the wire speed was set at 3 so I lowered down to #1 and it was much better, although it would lay the weld metal down really great at zero,,,,!!!!!! It would start to spit at #1 and really gob up at 1.5 on the dial. Prolly shouldn't be running like that but if It will weld at zero wire speed,,,who am I to argue? Many THANKS for all the support,,,,I'm gonna go melt some wire,,,,!!!    THANKS,,
Reply:Reverse your polarity and get weldiing Use a mix with thar skinny wire 75/25 is fine.
Reply:Hey Bonzoo,,,LOVE your Avatar,,,,where is that statue at?? I did reverse the polarity as you suggested,,,and the arc seems to be much hotter and I get that frying egg sound now like it's suppossed to,,,!! I didn't check how it was wired and think it was same way the factory wired it up,,??    Many thanks for the info.
Reply:Most come from the factory set-up for flux cored wire.So if your running solid wire with gas,the wires would need to be reversed so the gun is positive and the ground is negative.Maxus Pro-125 MigChicago Electric 90 amp DC flux-coreLincoln Electric AC 225 tombstoneO/A torchM/O mini-torch10 acres of flatland15 acres of holler
