I recently purchased a Forney MIG welder used, and it came with a small bottle of argon/co2, but the original regulator was broken, so the previous owner purchased a Uniweld RHP 400 nitrogen regulator.  I need a little convincing that it will be OK to use a nitrogen regulator for argon.  Can I get some advice on this forum?  Michael Moreland, Mendocino, CA

Reply:Do yourself a favor and at least get something intended for the purpose you have in mind...it will save you headaches over time.As much as I hate promoting stuff imported from China, for $30 these flow meters work pretty well, but I have had issues with two (out of maybe 20) and they had to be replaced.  Luckily Amazon is good about that.https://www.amazon.com/Allturn-Weldi...NsaWNrPXRydWU=Check out my bench vise website:  http://mivise.comMiller Syncrowave 250DXMillermatic 350P with XR AlumaProMiller Regency 200 with 22A feeder and Spoolmatic 3Hobart Champion EliteEverlast PowerTig 210EXT
Reply:The regulator you have would be good for first stage to make a two stage regulator/flow meter but you would still need the standard type for second stage. You set first stage to have say 300PSI then that would be stable 300 psi for the whole tank until tank pressure gets below 300psi itself. Keeps the input to stage 2 consistent. You don't need that though a simple flow meter is all you need. Many cheapies from China available or name brand stuff at the welding suppliers online and local.
