I am looking for a tig welding project in aluminum.I am thinking an adjustable chair or stool for use at my welding table. This thing is probably steel and heavy as hell so I am thinking aluminum.Im do not know fabrication layout or the strengths of materials in design. Questions: Will aluminum lend itself to this design? Is it possible to marry a steel chair-screw and this proposed aluminum design?

Reply:The nut would need to be ALUMINUM as well to weld the two, it's a stool, it doesn't need to be fabbed from 1/4" steel tube, 16 or 18 gauge would be good if the welds are sound, if they aren't sound, then should you even attempt it?? Back story, October 15 of 2021 I missed my welding stool and landed HARD on my butt/tailbone, it still hurts, but slowly improving, I just turned 67 and just now getting back to where every step or every time I sit down doesn't hurt! It's your A$$, your choice. One thing I didn't think about was the nut/thrust collar in the picture, if the threaded rod and nut will come out together and sit on top of the collar on the chair frame then you may be golden.Last edited by CAVEMANN; 7 Hours Ago at 08:26 PM.NRA LIFE MEMBERUNITWELD 175 AMP 3 IN1 DCMIDSTATES 300 AMP AC MACHINEGOD HELP AMERICA!"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

Reply:You can use a steel nut, it just cant be welded to an alum frame. You can encapsulate the steel nut inside an alum housing like putting it inside alum sq tube that you add end caps to. As long as the nut is pretty stationary, it will work fine. Alum nuts suck and the threads will strip very easily.2x1/16 wall steel tube is just fine, but I would do 1/8 wall for the vertical piece as that will have the most amount of stress. The base wont have any real weight or stress issues.Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
Reply:just curious...WHY do you need an adjustable stool ?a simple bar stool type garagebchair has worked well for me for years...   my welding table height hasn't changed.Miller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221  True Wisdom only comes from Pain.
Reply:Do it without the threaded rod. Much simpler in design and no dissimilar metals.ChrisAuction Addict
