A common issue with the SP200 is smoking the choke and Im currently having the issue. I dont know the specs to go looking for a replacement. If anyone has them Id be grateful. Also, i have an idealarc 250 that has a larger choke that probably wouldnt be the right one to use in my sp200, but since i have 2 of them Id chop one up to use and get my mig back going. Ive seen the chokes in both and the 250 is definitely larger and a different winding.

Reply:You need a MIG choke not a stick choke.Just find another 200 amp mig and use its choke. But i would rebuild the cap bank. bad capacitors may be causing the choke to workto hard. Or just running it to hard to long. Not watching the duty cycle limits. If you can find the right size magnet wire, you might be able to unwind the old choke and wind new wire on the choke frame with same number of turns.
Reply:Why would you molest a working Idealarc 250. The cables look pretty small on it though.
Reply:I agree with Welder Dave, leave the late model 250 alone. And the bigger leads is a good suggestion as well. You might call Stumpfs In Mascoutah, Illinois. Ask to speak with Jim, hes been there since the early 70s, for advice on repairing your welder. Reply:By the way i knew this post existed about a year ago because I anticipated this happening eventually https://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthrea...bly-for-SP-200Unfortunately he hasnt been active in 5 years so getting any further info is out. Reply:You could sell the 250 for a decent price instead of robbing it for parts. Not much comparison between a 225 buzz box and an Idealarc 250. The stinger lead on a 225 is only 15' long.

Reply:the part in the picture is not a choke. it is a mag-amp.the burnt plates are the aluminum weld conductors. look real close, there are three sections. two with large flat wires and one in the middle with fine wire. The fine wire coil is driven by the pcb. Current in this coil allows current in the other two. Better test your weld diodes you might find a shorted one or two. same with the cap bank, check for a shorted or bad capacitor. Might be able to get one from an old R3R, R3S. three phase welders that have three of these. That might be adaptable. should be able to find for scrap metal cost.

Reply:As you can see its getting crowded in here. The 40 lb roll of wire is brand new as is the liner. Just get that fixed and get back to burning.

Reply:I think the mag can be rebuilt. It only smoked one side. The rest of the machine is excellent.

Reply:Here's why i said it looked rebuildable. The center coil is fine. It was just the outside finsink winding.

Reply:#4 cables limit the output capability on the 250 Idealarc. They are too small. #4 is only rated to carry 180 amps at 100feet and 30% duty cycle.
