This is an existing column that holds up a 12" S beam that runs across the shop, approximately 24-25' beam. Column is 4" square 1/4" wall. Plan is to attach a jib crane to this so I can cover a larger area with the hoist. Jib crane will be 9' long, hoist is 880 lb capacity. I plan to brace the column to the lower block wall to prevent leaning when it's not 90 degrees to the wall.

Reply:Beam is 6" W beam, 12 lbs ft. Had a few welded on pieces of 3" angle that had to be removed but the price was right,(free). The jib crane will be a tie rod design using 3/4" rod for the tie rod.Miller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. This is the part of the hinge assembly that will be welded to the beam. 3.5" o.d., 2.5" i.d. mechanical tube. I tried up the outside as best I could without removing too much material. There is a portion that didn't clean up since it was a drop that had some machining done previously. I had to take about 40 thousandths out of each end 4" deep for bushings.

Reply:I have some 3" nycast 6pa which is a really dense cast nylon material. That will be used for the bushings , bored to fit 1.25" pin. The top mount for the tie rod will be a piece of 1/2" X3" flat added to the upper part of the hinge portion welded to the beam. The rod will attach to that with a clevis. The lower portion will weld directly to the beam about 3/4-7/8 of the length of the beam. I will make a right hand- left hand type threaded sleeve to adjust for level.Miller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. The setup on the old South Bend 13" lathe for boring. The steady rest was almost to it's maximum diameter.

Reply:Great lathe.I do not know why South Bend made small steady rest for all there lathes. In past I made out steel a larger steady rest for my lathes.Dave
